Summer Time Safety for the Military Family
Summer is really here and with it comes those outdoor activities we all love to participate in and enjoy to the maximum! Because of their youth and nature, I think military personnel and their families tend to do adventurous activities. The kind that keep you young and give you an exuberance for life! However, they also tend to be the type of activity that can lead to injury or even death in some instances! So, I’d like to share a few tips on how to avoid some of those injuries (not foolproof but they never are). Some of these are based on training I received on active duty and some…

My Passions
What a great week it has been! Have I ever mentioned what a great company I work for? I don’t want to make that statement lightly but MilitaryAvenue is TRULY my passion. I have a few passions in life … my husband, my children, my God, my extended-family, my friends and MilitaryAvenue falls right in rank. What a privilege to work for the military-families each and every day, knowing what they go through, because I’ve been there… done that. (Although, I do believe strongly that we EACH have our own struggles and no one can truly say “I understand” but we should all at least say “I’ll be there for…

Life in the country when the neighbor comes to visit
Here in country living, life comes and goes. It is a bit different than living on Base or on Post or any Military Installation. Economic times have hit our area hard – rather slammed it. Our neighbors are not coming, but they are going and leaving their life long project houses for others to come and build their own dreams. Our driveway left under storm clouds too. Rain riveted canyons in our gravel entrance. Dale was continually digging, laying vented pipes, gathering rocks anything to divert the flow down hill. But, down it went, and off to never never land – or into the gardens not to return to where…

Summer Jobs
Summer has arrived at the Kocsis Household. It may not be summer on the calendar but school is out! The kids are sleeping in (well the teenager is anyway), staying up late & enjoying every moment in between. I remember these days as a child. The monotony of school was broken with the excitement of summer. I have clear memories of swimming at the base pool, having to pass the test to dive off of the diving board; taking our bikes to the shoppette to buy candy; playing on our slip and slide in the backyard; or jumping off the deck (as a teenager) to land in a little kids…

Celebrations and Why and How They Can Be Special
Last week we had a reason to celebrate! A little more than three years ago my wonderful military spouse fought off breast cancer after a long battle with multiple painful tests, surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. She never really slowed down and kept on moving ahead with life but then about three weeks ago she had a shock with a possible indication of a recurrence. The surgeon said “not likely” but he needed to do a biopsy to verify! You can imagine the discomfort and concern we both felt realizing another round of treatments was a possibility! We told our family, friends and church what was going on and really…

Twitter Anyone?
RT @DrumFMWR What is everyone doing for lunch? ACS is having their Brown Bag Lunch Series from today Noon to 1pm. Topic “Talking to a Deployed Loved One” If you don’t receive tweets, the above might not be in the best English format for you. However, for a multitude of folk, it is an easy read. The subject caught my eye and brought me back a decade or so. Whenever Dale was on the road, somehow the word got out to the washing machine, the dryer, the car, the kids tonsils… “Let’s keep the family entertained!” Lovely. At first when the phone rang and his sweet endearing voice softly came…

Zesty Italian Chicken
It is cold outside. Wait, it is JUNE! Today the temperature is 57 degrees at 1 pm. A few weeks ago, I would have loved this warmth. Now, I’ve been spoiled by warm dry air. My garden is thriving in the overcast moisture… but not me! So, I need something warm and zesty for dinner. I love using salad dressings as marinades, as sauces and even as dressings on salad! Italian dressing has a zip and bite to it that goes so well with chicken, and then there is that side dish of crusty bread, always good. Cooking in a Dutch oven, a heavy cast iron pot that can sit…
