    Grandma’s Pot

    August 24, 2012 /

This is my Grandma’s Pot. I like to imagine all the food she cooked in it.  Soups for her family, pasta for guests, maybe mashed potatoes for a big family gathering or just a small brisket for herself and Pop. Continue Reading about my favorite pot, Grandma’s Pot My mom gave it to me a few years ago after Gram passed away and I have to admit it is my favorite pot.  (Who knew anyone could love an ‘ordinary’ pot?)  This summer alone I have made quarts of pasta sauce with tomatoes from my garden.  I have cooked salsa to last all winter long.  I have enjoyed simmering, sauteing, boiling and glazing, all…

    A Slice of Summer

    July 7, 2011 /

Ahhhh Summer Fare.  There are so many good, fresh, healthy foods out there this time of year.  It is my favorite time for munching and crunching! Fresh, healthy foods are an investment in your health as well as your wallet.  Before we dive into some of my favorite recipes I want to share just a couple of money saving tips for your eating pleasure: The Garden, my passion, on so many fronts. It embodies good health, good stewardship, and good eats!  According to USAA: “A National Gardening Association study found that families with gardens spent an average of $70 on supplies and reaped $600 of food a year.” Grow Money in Your…

Tasty Tuesday Dress Me Up Salsa Pico De Gallo

    August 17, 2010 /

Salsa is a staple at our house, and has been for years. Tell me… WHO can live without tortilla chips and salsa? Or quesadillas with salsa? The occasional late night nachos with salsa? You get the picture. I used to have a truck load pumped into the house… back ‘er up and fill the tank. Well, not really, but if felt like that. I would wipe out a whole shelf in the commissary each time I went. So, naturally after canning a gazillion tomatoes the light bulb went off as to how to use these red beauties and the first thought: Salsa. There are several recipes for this mainstay, here is my…

In the mood for some Mexican Food?

    June 16, 2009 /

I was in our local grocery store last week and eyed the tomatoes, corn and other fresh items that were on sale. Soon it will be our local products sitting in the bins. (Small store, with lots of local flavor!) I don’t know, but the picture I took in of the vegetables just put me in the mood for some good Mexican food. Right there, sorting through the red peppers was a good friend with a recipe card in her hand. She volunteered to share it with me… and said it was good to pass it on. I love getting tried and true recipes. This one is great, give it…

To everything there is a season.

    March 27, 2009 /

To everything there is a season, and with Lent here, fish – well seasoned is a celebration unto it’s self. While living in Florida we had what we thought was an unending supply of red snapper available to us. This white fish was easy to adapt to all favorite recipes. It broiled, grilled and baked to perfection. And best of all, when we went out on a party boat with a crowd of folk, we brought home a cooler full of this bounty. The results: invitations to the neighbors for back yard feasts! We did love Florida!Cod can easily be a great substitute for snapper. It too is firm and stands…

    Fruit Basket Upset

    November 3, 2008 /

Childhood games were the best: interaction, laughter and goofiness reigned in my ‘organized fun time’. Fruit Basket Upset required at least 10 friends, names of fruits: each child picked a fruit type. Then, with one less chair we waited for the ‘it’ to call out two or three fruits – at that time up we would jump and change chairs before ‘it’ could take our spot. Perfect name and game for this time of year. Soon the Thanksgiving fruit bowl will be assembled: pineapple, pears, apples, grapes, bananas, oranges and tangerines. The table will be arranged… and usually there is one less ‘good’ chair than I would like. (NEVER too…

    School Lunch

    August 29, 2008 /

Can I tell you how much I enjoy making school-lunch for my kindergartner? This is a phenomena to me! I hate cooking. I abhor baking. Lunch around here is usually pretty simple; chicken nuggets & fish sticks, cheese-sandwiches or quesodillas. We don’t deviate very much. So I am just amazed at how much I enjoy pulling out *E*’s lunch-box every night and finding good food to put in it for the next day. So here has been our lunch menu so far:Tuesday: Roast Beef Sandwich (cheese, tomato and onion too), Fruit Snacks, Go-gurt, and iced-tea;Wednesday: Left-over Chicken Fingers from Olive Garden, a packet of ketchup, a couple slices of watermelon,…
