The Gold Star Family & Our American Flag

    August 20, 2013 /

This past weekend was out of this world.   Boating, Bike Riding, Ga-Ga Ball, Campfire & S’mores, and much more, all wrapped in time spent as a family.  A huge thank you to Ohio’s Operation Military Kids and the USO for supporting programs like Military Family Camp.  This was top-notch support!  I desperately want to share more about the weekend but need to take the time to share this solemn moment and give it its due “time in the spotlight”. In our group of about 50 there were three Gold-star families, enjoying the weekend just like the rest of us.  On Sunday morning a Gold-Star Dad and his three grandsons, one being a Gold-Star…

Super Bowl Sunday: It’s all about the food

    February 1, 2013 /

The Super Bowl is this Sunday and I admit, the first thing it brings to mind is food for me.  Clearly the 49ers or Ravens are not in my top 10 teams.  Don’t judge. We will be enjoying Chili, Source: militaryblog.militaryavenue.com via MilitaryAvenue.com on Pinterest Buffalo Chicken Dip, Source: spicedblog.com via MilitaryAvenue.com on Pinterest Salsa, Source: militaryblog.militaryavenue.com via MilitaryAvenue.com on Pinterestand some crunch veggies and dip.  But there are some other great ideas too that I thought you would enjoy!  Be sure to watch our new Celebrations, Gatherings and more – Military Family Style Pinterest Board for more fun ideas  Source: pizzazzerie.com via MilitaryAvenue.com on Pinterest Source: facebook.com via MilitaryAvenue.com on…

    Frankenstorm and Gratitude

    November 5, 2012 /

My friend, Ann Marie over at Household 6 Diva recently posted on Facebook this epiphany: There is always, always, always, always, always, something to be thankful for. #pinterestproverb We were really walloped by Frankenstorm Sandy. Folks in my area lost power in the storm on Monday, October 29th, and finally had it restored Sunday morning, November 4th.  (I’m one of the lucky few to never have lost it.)  Kids were out of school for ‘inclement weather’ (to say the least) for two, three and four days. Basements were flooded.  Trees were down. Roads impassable. Yet, there were SO FEW posts on Facebook from my friends that were negative. A Hurricane and Gratitude? Can it be?  Keep Reading…

    Self Esteem vs Self Respect

    October 26, 2012 /

Last weekend was cold.  Cold and rainy.  The kind of weather that makes you want to curl up in front of a fire with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book.  Instead I was at a soccer tournament for my ten-year old.  Three games over Saturday and Sunday 90 minutes from home.  Three games of pure determination on our boys’ parts.  Three games of ‘Go, Avon, Go!’  … Three losses. Continue Reading about how to turn the loss into a win, Self Esteem vs Self Respect But that doesn’t necessarily make this mom sad:  * The relationships that those boys are making out there on the field, the friendships…

Stretch Out in New Found Comfort

    May 2, 2012 /

Stretching out in style. I had to have it: online bargain that not only pinched pennies, but my toes too… sigh!  So, not the best of purchases, yet… Such a good deal, and oh so cute… Who could pass up a pair of shoes that would go with so many outfits? Oh be still my dancing feet. OUCH. They arrived as cute as ever! Shiny brass buckle, snappy color red inset. Loved them. And then I slid my foot in ……….. whoa. This was not Cinderella standing in front of the prince. What to do?  There was no way could I let them sit in the box. So… enter ingenuity! Air…

Tragedy in Chardon – Talking about Emergency Preparedness with Children

    February 28, 2012 /

Sunday night we were at the kitchen counter and my boys said something to the effect “I wish we could blow up the school.”  I stopped.  It was typical school-age conversation.  If there’s no school they can stay home and play all day right?  This was their logic. I was immediately taken to Columbine, Jonesboro, even Virginia Tech.  What came out of my mouth was a stern but caring “We don’t joke about that.”  Kind of like you don’t joke about firearms and terrorist activities standing in line at the airport, you don’t joke about guns, bombs or other activities of that nature in relation to school.  It’s not funny.…

    Mad Housewife

    November 13, 2011 /

Isn’t it fun sometimes to just not be serious about yourself?  I take myself too seriously sometimes.  Dinner preparations, school work with the kids, household to keep straightened (I can’t even begin to keep it clean), a husband to keep track of.  So when I ran out to the grocery store this afternoon to pick up staples for the week (after my usual Sunday afternoon menu-planning) a bottle of wine practically jumped into my cart. I had a glass this evening with a great big grin, a cheers to me — mom, spouse, Household 6 — all while remembering that sometimes it sure feels good to take moments for myself.  I hope you can do the same.…

    The Man-Bag

    July 25, 2011 /

My son has a man-bag. This sends me into fits of hysterics every time I think about it. It all started out with a dad-and-son trip to Sports Clips.  You see, I am frugal.  We do our best to save around here where we can, when we can.  This way I can enjoy some of the ‘finer things in life’ with less guilt. (Like fulfilling my need to close the kitchen and eat out once in awhile.)  As my eight-year old starts to care more and more about ‘style’ my handy-dandy clippers are failing him.  (I’m sure it has everything to do with the clippers and nothing to do with my ability.  Just…

    Oatmeal Walnut Waffles

    January 18, 2011 /

Sunday Night Supper… in our house needs to be a simple satisfying meal. Now sometimes this meal occurs in the afternoon, but often it’s an evening feel good, relaxed yummy time. Oatmeal Walnut Waffles. As Sesame Street would say… without *W* waffles would be awful. See, it is a childlike time. Syrup, honey, jam or just hard butter top these aroma beauties and allow the weekend to come to closure. Oatmeal Walnut Waffles 3 eggs separated 1 1/2 c milk 1/4 c oil or melted shortening 1/2 c oatmeal 1 3/4 c all purpose flour 2 1/2 t baking powder 1 t salt cinnamon In a medium bowl beat egg…
