My Inspiration, the Veteran in my life
Veterans Day, a day to honor and thank veterans, has come and gone. However, the opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate a veteran should never be passed. As an Army National Guard wife I swell with pride whenever my husband wears his uniform to serve our country. When I remember deployment and months that I have been without him I shed a tear but then think to myself we did it! When I think about how his very basic need to serve has driven him to do just that, and to do that with honor, I remember the many qualities that attracted me to him so many years ago. But my pride in my husband stems much further back…

Inspiration for Veterans Day > A Critically Wounded Hero and His Wife Speak Up
As Veterans Day approaches my thoughts (and I am guessing many Americans as well) frequently go to images of World War II veterans, local veteran recognition, parades, corporate efforts for veteran employment announcements and images of Arlington National Cemetery. CPT Edward Klein and wife Jessica See below for photo creditThe wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have created a new focus on veterans and one that often (thankfully) includes the wounded heroes who will bear the scars, invisible injuries and lost limbs of war. Captain Edward Klein, US Army, a triple amputee due to an IED attack in Afghanistan, and his wife Jessica joined the DoD Blogger Roundtable to discuss their…

Two Very Different Veteran Day Celebrations
Last week I was privileged to be invited to the 3d Annual USAA Influencer Conference in San Antonio, TX. Today, I was invited to Pine Ridge Elementary School in Ada, MI. Both had Veterans Day celebrations that impacted me but in two very different ways. Both sent and had a wonderful message! USAA is built around veterans and their members are veterans and their families so there is a natural appreciation and their Veterans Day program certainly showed their affiliation. A dignified and respectful ceremony with flag officers, wounded warriors from the nearby medical center, family members, USAA team members and a crowded, standing room only audience. Captain Smiley speaking…

Veterans Day – The Battle Hymn of the Republic
I can honestly say I’ve never criedfor the song ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’. Until today. It had been too many weeks since we made it to the pews of our church. Between a special monthly kids service (called Kids Stuff) for the parents too, nursery duty, lice (ya, bleck!), an annual soccer tournament that was on a Sunday (boo hiss), and Frankenstorm Sandy (no heat, no electricity that week) I hadn’t sat in the sanctuary to worship since September. I missed it. I was a little emotional to begin with (Congregational Worship stirs up an emotion I cannot explain. It is my soul, the Spirit, unleashed.) But then to top it all off it was Veterans…

CELEBRATION OF SERVICE KICKS OFF – THE HOME DEPOT
An exciting program is launching today, The Home Depot Foundation and The Home Depot store associates are deploying a two-month community outreach initiative, Celebration of Service to transform the homes and lives of veterans across the country. From September 6 to Veterans Day in November, store associate volunteers will complete hundreds of service projects – from making mobility modifications to the homes of injured veterans to renovating shelters for homeless veterans. Volunteer projects also will include energy efficient upgrades to homes of individual veterans and facilities that serve them to help reduce utility bills. Over the next four months, the MilitaryAvenue.com team will be partnering with The Home Depot as…

#79 of 101 Ways to Thank a Veteran: Send a Christmas Card
Have you read 101 Ways to Thank a Veteran? They were written with Veterans Day in mind but many for all year round. 79. Remember Veterans during other holidays, especially those without family. Send a Thanksgiving card, Christmas card or Valentines card, to either a Vet that you know or through a VA Hospital or VFW.– http://www.militaryavenue.com/ways_to_thank_veteran Last night after dinner, we cleared the dishes, did our usual cleanup routine and then I pulled out the craft supplies. Glitter, paint, glue, markers, stock-paper and oh so much more Time to make Christmas Cards for a special Veteran in my life, my Grandfather (and Grandmother). They are far from family, not…

Blogger Friends! and more on Veterans Day this Year
Quest 35 Service ProjectMilitaryAvenue is always looking for new resources for our military community! Last Friday, on Veterans Day, I met some patriots and fellow bloggers who I think you might find interesting and helpful. Enthused, caring and smart, their excitement could be felt during our get together and the project. Hard working too! So they have information to share and stories to tell that just might get you over a hump day or help finish that bathroom project you have been waiting to get started on! First, I am not a real handy DIY (Do it Yourself) guy. Maybe it was all the military moves and short stays at…

Getting pumped up for Volunteering and “Give the Gift of Good”
$500 Gift Card – Got Your Attention? Read more…Volunteer; it is good for you! Veterans Day was a special day for veterans and their families! The outpouring of support from businesses, friends and family was impressive. MilitaryAvenue was invited to a very special event in Atlanta by the Home Depot Foundation. The Quest 35 project was exhilarating and left participants with a few sore smile muscles (maybe a back or two as well). The project is now a better living space for low income families and a future home for homeless veterans. #GiveGood Bloggers in Atlanta at Quest 35 The HD Foundation end their “Celebration of Service” veterans’ projects ended on…
