Oh My! The Numbers Are Dropping
That Downward Slope Good morning winter! I see you have arrived in splendor and beauty. The air is so cold outside that the snow shimmers. Each individual crystal is just resting in layers, ready to fly again should any breeze catch a facet. Oh yes, it is January. Cannot complain about the temperatures… I just marvel! In Michigan we know seasons. It is time to be upclose (indoors with a quilt) and personal (lips locked on a large mug of something hot to drink) with this Winter Wonderland World! And the temperature just continues to drop! And what goes down… must come up. Right? Join Us byDeborahonTuesday, January 22, 2013Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to PinterestMilitary…

Grandma’s Pot
This is my Grandma’s Pot. I like to imagine all the food she cooked in it. Soups for her family, pasta for guests, maybe mashed potatoes for a big family gathering or just a small brisket for herself and Pop. Continue Reading about my favorite pot, Grandma’s Pot My mom gave it to me a few years ago after Gram passed away and I have to admit it is my favorite pot. (Who knew anyone could love an ‘ordinary’ pot?) This summer alone I have made quarts of pasta sauce with tomatoes from my garden. I have cooked salsa to last all winter long. I have enjoyed simmering, sauteing, boiling and glazing, all…

Organizing The Road Trip
The Road Trip. Part of the Great American Military-Family Experience, right? We do it to PCS across the country. We do it to visit family and friends who we moved away from so many years ago, a visit home. We do it to for some R&R, to get out and see parts of the country so many American families will never see. The Road Trip, it is part of the ‘American Military Family’ definition. So how do you prepare for such a great part of your experience as a military-family? I recently ran across some great posts that I thought I would share with you. Whether you will be travelling…

Snowmen Hanging In There
Tuesday has to be the best day, my favorite day; it is Esther and Jacob day. For a few hours I have them in the center of my attention. Their voices, bursting energy, spontaneous laughter and curiosity are with me. This is a recipe for a successful day: mirth.Tissue falling everywhere! We cook, create with playdough, design with pastels and paper and we chatter. Songs that I love to sing fill the car on the way down to the house only to be interupted by counting buses, both school and rapid transport. Seseme Street’s Count vonCount would be oh so proud of my charges. Snipping corners for the perfect look. Each week we…

The sweet feeling of accomplishment
You know that feeling when you put off a project, and put it off and put it off… and then you /finally/ get it done!? Ahhhhh… It is a joyous feeling. I am miffed at myself for not taking a ‘before’ picture. But who knew a couple hours of work would give me such a sense of accomplishment. But picture this: BOXES of clothes from my sister-in-law and mother-in-law. Boxes stacked in the corner of his room (and not very neatly). Some rummaged through, other boxes still closed. Hand me downs (some with tags still on them) for my 13-month old. Clothes ranging in size from 18 months to 5T. Summer clothes, winter clothes, in between clothes. I will…

Eight years old, going on 16
I admit it. Saving money makes me feel good. We do a pretty good job of it around the house. Although, sometimes it takes a bit of creativity and willingness to learn. But I’m always up for a challenge. One of the big ways we have saved over the years is investing in hair clippers. Once a month the ‘Kocsis Household Barbershop’ opens and everyone gets ready to be sheered cut and styled. Some ‘customers’ are easier then others. My husband is hair-follicle challenged (Yes, he is bald.) so he is easy. *C*, 5 years old, starts to ‘itch’ before I’ve even turned the clippers on and swears to high-heaven…

Seasonal Light Disorder
“Seasonal Light Disorder”. Winter is tough. Winter in northeast Ohio is dark, dreary, cloudy. My mood can plumit into depths of darkness in an instant. Today at the grocery store I picked up a fresh basil plant. I came home, washed my kitchen window, put my new little ray of sunshine on a little plate. I BREATHED in the fresh spring air, the aroma of fresh gardens, sunshine and so much more all in a tiny little pot. What do you do to help with the dark dreary winter days? When we were stationed in Iceland we put lights on timers to help keep our ‘clocks’ on cycle. As those…

Crazy Carrots
I have always loved art. I see beauty in some of the oddest of places. Don’t we all? However, there are times when the normal is the ‘piece de resistance’: garden carrots.Art… it appears wherever it can, whenever the whim arrives.I prefer the pencil straight carrots that my grandchildren draw. I have several of their colorful creations taped on my cabinets displayed as art in my kitchen. Now to the carrots themselves. We did all the right steps, fertilized in fall, rotor tilled prior to winter, staked the fence posts late winter, rotor tilled to get that soil up to fluffiness. I still don’t know the proper farmer’s terms for…
