Military Kids Website Also Helps Parents, Educators

    January 23, 2013 /

Technology has come a long ways since I was a military-brat PCSing around the world in the 80s and 90s. I didn’t have to deal with year long deployments but I remember Dad being gone for six months at a time for training and schooling. Fast forward a ‘few years’ and I watched my husband head off to Iraq with the Ohio Army National Guard.  I had a few print pamphlets and a couple of Internet articles I could share with teachers that weren’t accustomed to having military-children in their classroom but there wasn’t much more support then that.I am so glad to see our military families getting the support they need! The Defense Department…

Local Military Discounts & the Community of Sharing

    April 27, 2012 /

The Military Family is a community of sharing. Where do you go to learn about new schools? Who do I contact to get housing at our new base? What is the best way to handle deployment stress for my children? When do I ask for help? Sometimes the questions are less serious but still pressing: Where is a military-friendly boarding facility for my pet? Where would a good place be to celebrate our wedding anniversary? Instead of living on base I want to live off.  Is there a military-friendly Realtor or Apartment at the base we are PCSing to? A great way to help other families is to share our…

    Ah the memories…

    March 26, 2012 /

I am coming up on a milestone, my twenty-year High School graduation-anniversary.  Some would say 20 year High School Reunion but, alas, there will be none of that for us.  I graduated from a small DoD School at the now closed Keflavik NAS, Iceland. Thank you for the memories! Funny how this post from Wife on the Roller Coaster suddenly triggered one for me out of the blue. June 7, 1992, I graduated from high school in the middle of my /final/ pcs as a military-brat. We hopped on a plane back to the states June 10, 1992. There were moves after high school. Mom and Dad PCSed two times while I was…

    Helping a Veteran!

    September 19, 2011 /

The Big Dead Tree … respecting the flag they fought under… The weather is getting a bit cooler, the days shorter, school has started and Fall is upon us! Veteran’s Day is fast approaching … The MilitaryAvenue team is busy preparing for Veteran’s Day with helpful articles, blogs, another Giveaway opportunity, recognizing veteran support organizations and much more during the almost two months preceding November 11th. Then I thought about how I had so much to be thankful for as a veteran. A loving wife (who moved 18 times and will celebrate a 40th anniversary in the spring) and family, a great support team of family/friends, veteran benefits, a church…

    A Gift of Your Time

    September 13, 2011 /

This weekend’s 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks brought a lot of reminiscing for America and individuals. “We Will Never Forget … “    Where we were, why did this happen and how we responded as a nation. The images just flowed through my head of the towers burning in New York, the Threat Condition Delta on our military installations, locked and loaded automatic weapons at the installation entry points, a command post full of very determined airmen and the President reading to a young group of children. So many to remember … As we were enjoying our coffee and breakfast this morning, I pulled out our calendar with special…

We Will Never Forget – 10 Year Anniversary of 9/11/01

    September 10, 2011 /

Why I will never forget … You can ask me where I was on Sept 11th, 2001 and I am instantly brought back to my apartment. (I worked from home); sitting at my desk; nursing a migraine headache. I can remember calling my husband; IMing my co-worker, Dan; learning that my dad, a colonel in the Air Force, was on high alert with a very long day (month … year…) ahead of him. Tears would stream down my face periodically throughout the day. For me life had changed. But what about my children? They weren’t alive. Ask the generations that are in high school and younger and they really may…

Afghan “Right”, Aghan“First” and Afghan “Like” DoD Bloggers Roundtable

    September 8, 2011 /

I have to admit to being very impressed. A general officer in the US Army writing a blog about what is happening in Afghanistan! So maybe his public affairs officer is helping? Might be a bit of pessimism in my blood; confirmed by my bride of almost 40 years! Deb blames it on Harry Reasoner and his famous news commentary in 1971 about the Vietnam War including the line, “That’s why being a helicopter pilot is so different from being an airplane pilot, and why in generality airplane pilots are open, clear-eyed, buoyant, extroverts. And helicopter pilots are brooders, introspective anticipators of trouble.” USAF HH-60G in Afghanistan Since I flew…

    Mentorship in Marriage

    May 13, 2011 /

39 years ago today, I wasn’t but a sparkle in my mom’s eye as she walked down the aisle in her beautiful white dress on her dad’s arm. Her focus, my dad, her future! My future. My children’s future. I have been blessed. Since that wedding day the Lt. and Mrs. became Mom and Dad to three children, me and my two younger brothers. They took their family where the military sent them, far from their own families. They relied on each other, friends around them and the grace of God. Their three children grew up, got married and had children. Dad has retired from the Air Force after thirty-years…

    Happy 10 Year Anniversary!

    May 2, 2011 /

Hubs and I celebrated 10 years of marriage this past week.  Ten years!  That seems huge to me, in this age of short term relationships, marriages falling apart, rampant-divorce.  I can’t wait till we hit our 20 year anniversary and then our 30th, 40th, 50th but for now I can’t help but look back at the past ten and smile. 10 Random Facts: Hubs and I danced to Susan Ashton’s Spinning Like A Wheel “This is good, and this is strong.  So hold to me and I’ll belong to you.”  Great lyrics to an unknown love song. Hubs and I met at our mutual friends’ wedding in  October of 1996.  We didn’t…

    Week in Review: February 27 – March 5, 2011 (Military News) #MilitaryMon

    March 7, 2011 /

Popular Military Family Articles for the week of February 27th – March 5th on MilitaryAvenue.com: 5 Things to Do With Your Income Tax Refund: Your refund is coming… Your refund is coming! OK, so maybe stealing from Mr. Revere is a bit overdramatic when talking about a potential income tax refund. After all, my message won’t change the future of a nation. I am, however, OK with borrowing a bit of his attention-grabbing magic because if you are receiving a tax refund, my refund-management message could literally change the future for you. … “Gray Matter”: David began his adult life as a car mechanic. Hands on cold gears, engine valves…
