The Super Bowl is this Sunday and I admit, the first thing it brings to mind is food for me. Clearly the 49ers or Ravens are not in my top 10 teams. Don’t judge. We will be enjoying Chili, Source: militaryblog.militaryavenue.com via MilitaryAvenue.com on Pinterest Buffalo Chicken Dip, Source: spicedblog.com via MilitaryAvenue.com on Pinterest Salsa, Source: militaryblog.militaryavenue.com via MilitaryAvenue.com on Pinterestand some crunch veggies and dip. Two Very Different Veteran Day Celebrations
Last week I was privileged to be invited to the 3d Annual USAA Influencer Conference in San Antonio, TX. Today, I was invited to Pine Ridge Elementary School in Ada, MI. Both had Veterans Day celebrations that impacted me but in two very different ways. Both sent and had a wonderful message! USAA is built around veterans and their members are veterans and their families so there is a natural appreciation and their Veterans Day program certainly showed their affiliation. A dignified and respectful ceremony with flag officers, wounded warriors from the nearby medical center, family members, USAA team members and a crowded, standing room only audience. Captain Smiley speaking…

Spouse’s Corner: Traditions – The Backbone of the Holidays
By now the decorations are up, the menu is being set, the cards and invites are purchased and stamps have been budgeted. Well, maybe in a perfect world. But the thought process has traveled down that project list. We hold traditions to keep the family on track as to what the family does: traditions help define family values and heritage. Some of these traditions can be left by the wayside without hesitation. I grew up in a Norwegian household. Lutefisk was always there on the table, but not anymore! Now I don’t even know if it is available in Michigan where I live. Oranges and walnuts were stuffed in our…

Tradition The Depths Can Be Only be Measured in Your Mind.
It’s traditional. And traditions in December, at Christmas time cause my thoughts to go spelunking… cave diving around the spirals of my mind. There are so many places, so many faces, so many hurdles jumped, parties attended and given, gifts purchased, cards written and received, children’s programs directed and those that we were in the audience over the years. Wonderful traditions and celebrations all. The filing cabinet for these remembrances is now standing in the living room. Twelve feet tall and lit up: 2009’s Christmas tree. Yeee Ha! It’s up, lit and decorated. And it is beautiful. We sat last night just looking at it and pointing to our history.…

The Military Community Celebrations!
The military community understands that celebrations are important to morale and finds frequent ways to do just that: CELEBRATE! This Sunday the troops overseas will see the Super Bowl live in many cases and those in combat zones will even get two beers! Many units in the US will celebrate together as well! What fun for everyone as units and friends socialize and get to watch the game and cheer on the Steelers (or that other team in the game)! 🙂 But what else do we celebrate? Think promotions! New babies! New arrivals to a unit and saying goodbye to friends and unit members who are getting ready to PCS.…
