The Home Depot Celebration of Service 2012 – Meet a military family.
The Home Depot Celebration of Service 2012 – Meet the Purvis family! I had the pleasure of meeting the Purvis family in GrandRapids, Michigan last week, as a part of The Home Depot Celebration of Service 2012. The Home Depot provided them (that we delivered) with decorations, a corner Christmas tree, and an opportunity to meet a wonderful family. Throughout my time with the family we shared plenty of laughs and a few serious and emotional topics. Mr. Purvis has been in the Army National Guard forabout 11 years. He has been deployed 3 times,to Egypt, Iraq and Afghanistan. The family’s living room wall is covered in pictures and memories…

Small Business Saturday: November 24, 2012
I am really intrigued by this idea of “Small Business Saturday”. The premise is the Saturday after Thanksgiving you go to your local family-owned, small business stores to do your Christmas Shopping.I got this ‘chain email from my mother-in-law a couple weeks ago. Usually I immediately hit delete on chains. I get over 100 emails a day so the delete key is my friend. But this one caught my eye and hits right along the Small Business Saturday concept: As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods — merchandise that has been produced at the expense…

I am really intrigued by this idea of “Small Business Saturday”. The premise is the Saturday after Thanksgiving you go to your local family-owned, small business stores to do your Christmas Shopping. I got this ‘chain email from my mother-in-law a couple weeks ago. Usually I immediately hit delete on chains. Sorry, I get about 50 emails a day – and that is just personal. But this one caught my eye and hits right along the Small Business Saturday concept: As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods — merchandise that has been produced at the…

Minute Out of the Norm: Tie Dye!
We have a summer routine here when the boys are home and not in child-care. We relax in the morning, watch a little PBS; get dressed for the day; do a few pages in their age-appropriate workbooks (we like to keep the mind active EVEN during the summer… ) and then it is time for something FUN! This week our fun was TIE-DYE! I bought a kit at WalMart… It was about $15 for a kit to make 7 shirts, plus I bought 4 white t-shirts ($3 each) and one toddler-onsie. The plan is to take the shirts to ‘Camp Grandpa’ this summer; so we made one for each of…

Here are ten of our most popular military-related articles for the week on MilitaryAvenue.com: Face of Defense: Guard Members Skate in Roller Derby: Some soldiers will do almost anything to stay in shape. Three soldiers from the Oklahoma Army National Guard are lacing up their roller skates, strapping on elbow and knee pads and taking to the rink as members of the Oklahoma City Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls. For those new to the sport, this isn’t the roller derby of the 1970s, when practically every move was choreographed as in professional wrestling. … Two New Government Rules That Help Military Families: The U.S. government has issued two new rules this…

Farmers Markets, Garage Sales, Crafts Shows… OH MY!
I recently wrote a quick blog for our Military Partners about how they can help YOU, the military family, know about events happening in your community. Perhaps, though, you know about events happening on base and off. This blog post is for you, too. Spread the word about on-post spouse functions, on- or off-base garage sales, bake-sales to raise money for scholarships, things happening around you that you want your community to know about! Submit events that you found out about, you have been to, you know others in your community would enjoy. Spring will soon be upon us! Sometimes that is hard to remember with still a couple of inches of…

A Minute out of the Norm: St Patrick’s Day Shamrocks
I have to admit it… I have the perfect kitchen door. It is a sliding glass door that catches the morning sun, brings about afternoon shade and a perfect view of the evening stars. I am a light-person. I crave sun-shine. I LOVE a warm sunbeam. Winter can be long and hard on me, especially in cloudy, wintry northern-Ohio. But back to that perfect kitchen door. It is a great spot to hang hand-made seasonal decor. We’ve hung painted-Easter egg crafts; Valentine Hearts; a cut-out snowflake or two; even some summer home-made flowers. If there is a decoration that can be made out of paper, made by a preschooler or grade-schooler … we…

A Minute Out of the Norm: Christmas Craft Idea for the kids
I struggle with Christmas ideas for my deployed husband. The deadline for getting packages in the mail is quickly approaching and I know I need to get everything wrapped up and mailed. But it is hard to wrap ‘nothing’. Hubby says that he doesn’t need anything. Hubby tends to get his boxers in a tizzy if I spend too much money. [He’s the financial conservative in the family… I’m all about keeping the economy going ;)] So when Hubby says he doesn’t need anything and doesn’t want me to spend money … makes it hard to send a Christmas package. So I was walking the crafts section of our local…
