The Path to Investing
Military Saves week is coming! From February 25 through March 2 there will be a concentrated effort to get our military families on the road to Financial Readiness, a subject matter near and dear to my heart. To get you thinking about this important week we have a guest blogger, Amy, Army spouse who shares some great thoughts about getting started on investing. Thank you, Amy, for helping to empower our military families through sharing your thoughts: “It’s important that both you and your spouse understand the investments that you have chosen”. I stared at this sentence, and felt like a hypocrite. I had shared a financial book with a friend who…

Roots and Wings
We have an interesting phenomena going on in my house. We have an 18-month old and an 18 year old (and two other brothers in between). My husband and I often laugh with each other over the fact that we are the “young parents” with *J* (at sporting events, parent-teacher conferences etc etc) and we are going to be the “old wiser-parents” with *L*. There are times when I just want my 18-month old to grow up. I want him to communicate (although this can be hard even for an 18 year old); tell me his favorite things; share his deepest wishes; form an opinion that doesn’t involve whining; meet friends;…

A Split Second Decision – and a Medal of Honor! DoD Blogger Roundtable
Medal Of Honor Recipient Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry and his wife Ashley“Rangers Lead the Way” We all make them – those decisions that are made in the blink of an eye. But some are more important than others, how about life changing ones? We take time to consider those? Right? Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry had a life changing decision and he only had the blink of an eye to make it in – the grenade was live, it was close and he and his fellow Rangers were going to die. His decision to pick up the Taliban’s grenade and throw it away from his team saved their lives and…

“No Shame in Seeking Help” – Real Warriors Campaign DoD Blogger Roundtable
Staff Sgt. Meg KrauseStaff Sgt Meg Krause had her act together! Joining the Army in 2001 she served as a medical technician at Landstuhl Army Medical Center in Germany and then found herself in Iraq. It was according to her a “life changing experience for me”. Something she did not expect! Leaving active duty in 2006 to attend college at Penn State she stayed part of the military with duty in the Army Reserve. Then the problems came: alcohol abuse, tardiness, poor class attendance, attitude changes, bad decisions and more! The unit leadership and peers noticed, family and friends too! But she failed to respond until her First Sergeant sat…

USAA’s Inaugural Military Blogger of the Month
I have a few responsibilities while holding the title of Director of Research and Development at MilitaryAvenue.com, but I admit my favorite is writing or “blogging”. I blog about personal experiences to give a sense of “you aren’t alone”; being a mother and how I’m learning new things every day; being the wife of a soldier and how it has made me stronger; even being an Air Force Brat and how it shapes me still today. But there are other things like I like to write about, things that I take from personal experience, throw in some research and it may not feel as personal but it is most definitely just as…

“The Army In Your Pocket” – DoD Roundtable
Do you have a smart phone? How do you use it? Can you use the Apps on it? I have one and there are so many applications (ie Apps) that I can not keep up with them. It appears that Uncle Sam via the US Army is ready to use commercial technology to help our soldiers fight the wars and win the missions that our country’s leadership tasks them to do. “The Army In Your Pocket” came from Lt General Michael Vane during a Department of Defense Blogger’s Roundtable this morning. General Vane is the Director of the Army Capabilities Integration Center who answered my first question, “what were the…

When we are informed we make better decisions. That is what USAA’s iPad application is all about! I have had the privilege of previewing their banking app for the iPad and I have to say I am mighty impressed. It just suits me. It is clean. It is organized. It makes me feel like I am in control. TECHNOLOGY! IT IS SAVING OUR TROOPS LIVES! – DoD Roundtable
Technology is Saving Our Troops Lives! They come with names like Wolfhound and Duke! Sounds like the family pet but these names are lifesavers for our troops and they show how technology can save lives! MilitaryAvenue met with Colonel John “Buck” Surdu, military deputy for the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, Communications-Electronics Center (CERDEC) during the DoD Roundtable as he excitedly described the capabilities of new equipment in the field. The colonel was pumped about saving lives and you could tell he was proud of his team’s efforts supporting the warfighters! So what is Wolfhound? Much like the famous dog this equipment has a great sniffer! In fact,…
