Military Friends – A Puzzle for Our Civilian Counterparts
Military friends! Sometimes our military lifestyle is a puzzle to our civilian friends and the rest of the nation. We have some opportunities that civilians normally do not receive and we also face challenges and lifestyle issues they may never see. But one thing we have that is “just to die for” is our military friends. We come together from all over the country (and in some cases the world), of all races, ethnic backgrounds, economic and educational levels, different goals and lifestyles and so much more diversity that most Americans ever have the opportunity to experience. I have to admit that this is our (my military spouse, mil brats…

Reflecting on MLK Jr Day
I have been thinking about Martin Luther King Jr Day the past few days and the impact this man has made on even my life. As a military-brat I grew up in a very diverse environment. There was not a ‘wrong side of the tracks’ on the various bases where we lived. My school friends were black, hispanic, pacific and white, with no real minority amongst us. We brats were adaptable. Different cultures, different values, different points of view. BUT same schools, same neighborhoods, same circles. Military life growing up was one big melting pot. And I wouldn’t change it for the world! Last night, sitting around the dinner table…

Menu Monday: Pigs- and Cows-in-a-blanket
Ah Summer! We no longer pack lunches for school in the morning but fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants at lunch time. Frozen pizzas cooked in the toaster oven, PB-and-J, cheese sandwiches… all favorites around here! But this weekend when I was grocery shopping I picked up a few packs of refrigerated croissant rolls. YUM! So much diversity in one little package of raw dough. A fun and perfect summery lunch in my kids’ eyes is what we have dubbed ‘Pigs-in-a-Blanket’ and ‘Cows-in-a-Blanket’. The “pigs” are half a cold hot dog rolled in one raw-croissant roll. The “cows” are half a cheese stick rolled in a raw-croissant roll. After you have them rolled up stick…

Seriously?! Don’t Tread on Me!
Once in awhile things get my goat. Is it that my grandfathers, my father and my husband all served to protect our freedoms as Americans? That I recognize what the American Flag stands for? That I hope my children recognize the freedoms others have fought so hard for … “California Students Sent Home for Wearing U.S. Flags on Cinco de Mayo“I’ll admit: I don’t think I have a trace of Mexican in me. I am a melting pot of ethnicity from generations gone back, but Mexican … I don’t think it is in there. HOWEVER, we still had our fun at dinner time last night and enjoyed Tacos, one of…

Veteran Education and Your “Education Bank Account”
Did you know you started your “Education Bank Account” when you finished Basic Training? A veteran receives a minimum of two hours of college Phys Ed credit for just completing basic! Nice! I just met with Dr Merodie Hancock, the Vice President/Executive Director of Central Michigan’s Off-Campus Programs who shared some great information about veteran education opportunities! Dr Hancock has extensive experience working with veterans and helping them pursue their educational goals. She commented that her classroom experience with veterans was exciting and that she found them to have numerous strengths including: diversity, a global view and being incredibly informed. That was the start of a great interview and I…
