Posthumous Silver Star to be presented to the family of U-2 Pilot, Captain Gary Francis Powers on Friday
“Best Father’s Day Present Ever” Capt Gary Powers – See Below for photo creditsWhat does a Silver Star presentation have to do with Father’s Day? To the Power’s family, Friday is a correction to history, a heritage that can be reflected on with pride and a celebration of a father who was a Cold War hero. Air Force Chief of Staff General Norton Schwartz will present a posthumous decoration to the U-2 pilot who was shot down over the Soviet Union on May 1, 1960. On Wednesday, we spoke with Gary Powers, Jr about the upcoming ceremony and how it had impacted his family during a DoDLive Blogger Roundtable. The…

Father’s Day Care Package Ideas
Sending a letter to Dad Kids say the darndest things! It is the truth. I got some wonderfully done papers for Mother’s Day from my first grader. My favorite line on one was, “What my mom likes best about being a mother is _____.” His response was “Being the boss”. Who knew being bossy was so much fun, right?! 🙂 I would amend his answer to include giving hugs, kisses, sharing smiles and tickles, ‘Rise and Shine’ and ‘Goodnight Moon’ and every hour in between … but I’m sure he just ran out of space 😉 Now it is time to move from Mother’s Day and on to Father’s Day,…

Mother’s Day Greetings in the Stars and Stripes
When we think about soldiers, sailors, marines, coasties, airmen on Mother’s Day we most often think about the mom sitting back at home hoping their Hero is safe and out of harm’s way. Not often do we think about that Hero thinking of her own children who are back home and missing them to pieces. But it is true. Women comprise 200,888 or 14.3 percent of the DoD Active Duty force. (She Serves, too) I’m sure they could use a message of support this upcoming Mother’s Day! Once again Stars and Stripes is printing messages in their overseas additions for our loved ones! When my husband was in Iraq my…

Norwegian Waffles for Syttende Mai
It is almost time to say “Hurra for syttende mai”! I can hear the old ladies in my childhood church chatting and clacking… most of them had dentures that didn’t fit quite so well. They had stamina, girth and a love for breads. Yes, these were Norwegian women. They were a tad formal, my Grandma referred to her best friends as Mrs. Otto Andersen, Mrs. Moy, or Mrs. H. C. Andersen. This made me smile, as I can picture these women in sensible shoes, baggy hose, blue suits of every shade, clutch purses and a handkerchief in hand. Each had an open house policy… come on over and have a…

Stars & Stripes Mother’s Day Tribute
Is there a special-mom in your life that deserves a Mother’s Day Tribute in the Stars & Stripes? I’ve participated in Stars & Stripes for many other occasions. Hubby saved his Stars & Stripes from Father’s Day. There was a tribute from me as well as one from my own mom. As he showed the ads to me while he was on R&R he had a definite smile on his face. I am sure they brightened his day. Stars and Stripes is now accepting submissions for FREE Mother’s Day Tributes. If you know a Mom you would like to thank for her love and care —now is the time to…

Father’s Day from Afar
Father’s Day is this Sunday – talk about creating a void for our family going through our first deployment. I’m sure the void will be felt all across the globe on the 15th. I fortunately have stayed on top of this one (I’m not on top of much lately). Hubby’s care-package is in the mail & he should be receiving it any day now. I hope it oozes with love! (As opposed to oozing with sticky-melted chocolate!) I’m not great at ‘themes’, maybe with some practice I will get there… but for now the theme is simply: “From Us” 🙂 A letter from our oldest, 14; Some pictures from our…
