Military Spouse Employment – Critical to Quality of Life for Many
…by making it easier to PCS your JOB in addition to your family and household goods! As many of you may know, the month of May is Military Appreciation Month! This year DoD began an effort to make it “31 Days of Military Spouse Appreciation” as well; to highlight their efforts to help with spouse employment. It is not a surprise to the military community that the economy, the health insurance issues for corporations and small businesses and career transportability issues have made it harder for spouses to find jobs in new areas of the country after a PCS. May is Military Appreciation Month
“… being part of the military tradition and all of the hoopla!” This month is Military Appreciation Month and while it highlights an opportunity for government leaders, civilians, neighbors, extended family and businesses to thank our men and women in uniform, their families and veterans; we should take a moment to appreciate ourselves too! The military lifestyle is tough and we share a unique perspective on world events. Yes, we have/had jobs where our families watched CNN or other news to see where we might be going next. How many prayers have gone up for our safety, protection and success? This month is a great opportunity to reflect on what…

Military Spouse Appreciation Day Blog Hop
I come from a long line of great military-spouses! Both of my grandfathers served in the US Army during World War II. My father was an Air Force pilot for 30 years. Now my husband is with the Ohio Army National Guard. Military-wives, in particular, have always been part of my world. They were the aunts in my life when my mom’s and dad’s sisters lived so far away. They were the teachers in the DoD schools I attended. They were the laughter I would hear coming from my own mom’s soul when she was with her best of friends. So here I am a military-spouse in my own right. The oak tree in the…

“Too Sweet a Deal”? You Decide!
The military lifestyle is a tough road! No one can deny that but many civilians do not understand why it is tough either! Long deployments, extensive TDY/TADs, frequent relocations (PCS), and caring for our families despite these conditions are frequently misunderstood. Also largely misunderstood is the impact on the lives of Reserve Forces including the National Guard and Service Reservists. Yep, some civilians may even ignore these situations but I think the major issue is education. How do we tell our fellow citizens that we are stretched as a community and in some cases would like them to “cover our 6 o’clock” for us? Checking 6 is when another aircraft…

Week in Review: May 29 – June 4, 2011 (Military News) #MilitaryMon
Popular Military Family Articles for the week of May 29th – June 4th on MilitaryAvenue.comArmed with a Battle Saint™: A military Mom, Cynthia LeMay, has launched a project to support the troops. She has a number of loved ones serving in the military, including a son with the 101st Airborne who is currently serving in northern Afghanistan. Many of her family members are in harms way and not a moment goes by when she doesn’t worry and wonder if she could do more to help. At a recent family reunion, she sat around a big bonfire listening to the stories of war told by family members’ home on leave. Some…

Caring for Our Wounded/Disabled Heroes! Two New VA & DoD Efforts to Help!
Military Appreciation Month was extremely busy with activities for military community members. The month included recognition programs and much to be thankful for; such as a successful mission to find and eliminate Al Qaeda’s leader. But life continues and now some military members are preparing for a PCS or deployment (again), some are in basic training (best wishes to a cousin’s friend at Ft Jackson) and many are helping out those affected by natural disasters such as flooding, fires and tornadoes (and we just started hurricane season). For some military members life changing events have had a significant impact on their lifestyle. Severe injury, retirement, separation, etc are at the…

The Field Exercise at Ft Knox and Businesses That Care! (It is Military Appreciation Month)
Why are some businesses successful at reaching out to the military community? Fantastic Sams shows their colors! We just attended a special event for military spouses at Ft Knox, called a Field Exercise that was a wonderful time! It brought together 300 Army spouses (most had seen their soldier deploy multiple times – some up to six times) and provided them an opportunity to learn coping skills and laugh together about military life and its challenges!
