Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) Operation Kid Comfort Program

    October 22, 2008 /

I just received this information from our FRG leader and thought I would pass it along for our deployed-families out there: Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) Operation Kid Comfort ProgramThis program is designed to address the emotional stress that children of military personnel suffer during a parent’s absence from home. Operation KidComfort serves children of deployed Service members. ASYMCA volunteers collect photographs from military families to make “photo-transfer” quilts (for children 5 years old and under; pillows for those over 5) that bear the images of the deployed family member, alone or interacting with the family. Photographs of the deployed parent are scanned into a computer, printed, and then placed onto…

April is Month of the Military Child

    April 2, 2008 /

April is a big month for military families as we recognize the younger part of the family teams that serve their country! Month of the Military Child is celebrated in many ways and you can find events occurring throughout the month at nearby installations! Military kids face many challenges and hurdles as they relocate with their families. From long separations with a deployed parent(s) to an extensive list of schools attended; friends made and then goodbyes spoken (too often for most parents). How many times did we recognize that the friends knew we were leaving as they slowly withdrew from our kids to protect themselves from the pain? But the…

Are You Made of the “Right Stuff” or What the Heck is a Heart Stress Test

    March 5, 2008 /

Last week I had a heart stress test when my doctor thought it was a good idea. I did have a humorous moment as I thought of the movie, “The Right Stuff” about the first astronauts and the physical exam process that NASA put them through before they were cleared for training. I can still laugh about it many years later as the scenes run through my mind. But this was different as I was not ready for this idea as a guy who flew for 30 years and kept fit to pass those flight physicals and PT tests. I work out hard and frequently; but, maybe enjoyed the retired…

Brace yourself Mom… It’s Science Fair time!

    January 18, 2008 /

Science Fair: Those words were the scariest words spoken by the children at the supper table. A hush fell over the room. Dale would mysteriously get a phone call to send him into the other room. Appetites were quashed. Those words work better than Slim Fast! Lamely I would say, “Oh, this is going to be fun.” No one bought it. I was talking to some Moms who are facing the science fair time of year, as if taxes aren’t enough… but at least with tax time, there is tax help for free on Base. However, with science fair you are on your own. The project has to be interesting,…
