Grandma’s Thunder Cake
Tomorrow is Grandparent day in my 1st graders class. Can you tell we aren’t near a military base? Clearly, this isn’t something I grew up with when I was in 1st grade, stationed at Sheppard AFB thousands of miles from either of my grandparents. My first grader is fortunate. His Grandpa and Grandma Kocsis live close enough that they are going to join him in his class for the morning. I am filled with a sense of love. Then at the same time I have a sense of some sadness. My parents (his Grandpa and Grandma Kissinger) don’t live close. They don’t get to see each other often enough in my…

Staying Healthy: Time for Us
An intimate relationship is one of life’s greatest pleasures. But it also takes planning and work. We all need to make being together a priority. Otherwise, life takes over and the relationship with your spouse takes the back-burner. I ran across a blog-post this morning that I would highly recommend reading from Warren Baldwin, titled “Marriage: The Difficult Years“ While we often look at the similarities we share with the person we love, the differences cry out for recognition. Our bodies, communication, and emotional/mental processing are different. We both crave intimate connection with our spouses, but experience it differently; one uses communication to bond, the other to convey information; one looks for…

Deployment and Finances
Deployment … Changing of the Guard … Total upheaval … “Change” doesn’t even begin to describe what deployment was for my family. I was juggling so many balls while my husband was gone for a year that they could have put me in the circus… (or possibly the funny farm?) One of those proverbial balls: Finances. The family budget and bill paying are somethings that my husband does for the family, and he does it well! Bills are paid on time, the budget is allocated correctly, and interest-payments are kept to a minimum. So what was one of my major stresses in the months before and after he left? How…

Menu Monday: Italian Meatballs
Ah Family! We had a wonderful time visiting my brothers, parents, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews this weekend. We are quite a crew. From the humble beginnings of ‘The Lt and Mrs’ to Grandma, Grandpa, three adult children & spouses, and nine-grandkids. When we get together we rock the house! This weekend’s visit was to meet my brand new nephew and niece. Twins!; born on January 3rd to my youngest brother, his wife and their two older sons. I was excited to meet them but couldn’t dream of putting work on the new family so I planned a big meal of Spaggetti and Meatballs. My brother, James, invited my folks over…

Would you like a bouquet?
Recently we traveled to Fort Riley and participated in the Army Wife Network (AWN) “Priceless Package”. When this event comes to your post, be FIRST in line to sign up for a seat. It is an unbelievable time of relaxing, laughing, learning and sharing. All attendees walk out of that room with a greater understanding of military pride. They are armed with battle buddies, recognize that normal is WONDERFUL and gripping a piece of normalcy and holding on to that with flexed fingers is all important. Like my Aunt used to say… “whatever doesn’t make you stronger kills ya.” She had a way with words! This time is a must…

Just Get It Done! Chelle Brewer Walks Her Talk
Military Spouse of the Year 2008 does not give up her title but has a teammate now: Tanya Querio. Chelle (pronounced Shellie) let it be known that she is not sitting down and stepping aside but is alive and well and on fire for today’s military. A powerful weapon aimed at complacency – and she is on our side! WAHOOOOO! Chelle has a heart that is jammed packed with adventure, sensitivity, compassion and sorrows. She is strong, determined and sounded like Wonder Woman when I spoke with her in a great teleconference which you can hear at http://www.defenselink.mil/Blogger/ click on the Pentagon Web Radio spot. Mrs Brewers first love is…
