PCS Allowances and Entitlements: Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH): is an allowance to offset the cost of housing when you do not receive government-provided housing. Your BAH depends upon your location, pay grade and whether you have dependents. BAH rates are set by surveying the cost of rental properties in each geographic location. The rates are established such that members in each pay grade, independent of location, pay approximately the same out-of-pocket expenses. Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) …
Coming Home: A video tribute for our Military Spouses keeping the home-fires lit on this Military Spouse Appreciation Day! Thank you to all of our troops & their families for their service & sacrifice – from MilitaryAvenue.com …
Military Spouse Blog Hop: Hi, my name is Leanne 🙂: I just ran across a Military Spouse Blog Hop going on at fellow military-spouse’s blog “Riding the Roller Coaster”. What a great idea for this special-week for Military Spouses! I have had a lot of fun getting to know Military Spouses through our “Faces Behind the Hero” and this is another great way, the blog-hop, to network! (BTW … I’m looking for more ‘Faces’. Let me know if you are interested!) First of all as a way of introduction, I am Leanne; wife of a National Guard Soldier, daughter of a retired-Airman …
President Issues Military Spouse Day Proclamation: President Barack Obama has issued a proclamation declaring today as Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Here is the text of the president’s proclamation: When Americans answer the call to serve in our Armed Forces, a sacred trust is forged. Our men and women in uniform take on the duty of protecting us all, and their spouses and families also help shoulder this important responsibility. …
Seriously?! Don’t Tread on Me!: Once in awhile things get my goat. Is it that my grandfathers, my father and my husband all served to protect our freedoms as Americans? That I recognize what the American Flag stands for? That I hope my children recognize the freedoms others have fought so hard for … “California Students Sent Home for Wearing U.S. Flags on Cinco de Mayo” … I’ll admit: I don’t think I have a trace of Mexican in me. I am a melting pot of ethnicity from generations gone back, but Mexican … I don’t think it is in there. HOWEVER …
His Eye is on the Sparrow: There is an old Gospel Hymn that I grew up with, ‘His Eye Is on the Sparrow’… “For His Eye is on the Sparrow … and I know He watches me.” I never put deep thought to the song until today. I’m about to get ‘preachy’ and in many ways I don’t want to “leave a bad taste” with anyone by sharing my beliefs (truly they aren’t offensive) but I do want you to know that you are cared for. We all need that reminder! Today. Hubs was out in the field. He left yesterday evening and will be home tomorrow night. Not a major stretch of time but long enough to invoke Murphy’s Law …
Advance Pay for a PCS: If you have PCS orders you can receive advance pay and allowances with commander’s approval. These include advances on basic pay and Basic Allowance for Housing. Up to three months of basic pay at either the old or new duty station can help with out-of-pocket expenses, not typical of day-to-day military living. If you can not afford a PCS expense but expect reimbursement for it after the move then an advance in pay may be what you need. …
C-130 Units Prepare to Fight Fires – DoD Roundtable: With all eyes on the Gulf of Mexico oil slick catastrophe, it was interesting to talk with the Air Force responders to potential wild fire disasters. Created in the early 1970s after a major fire in Long Beach, California destroyed hundreds of homes with a civilian fleet of airtankers unable to meet the needs of firefighters, the Modular Airborne FireFighting System (MAFSS) program is a joint effort of the Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard’s C-130s in four airlift wings. …

I’m Back: It’s Thursday and it has been one of those weeks that I would just like to turn the lights out on and forget. Hubby is gone. We went down to the Wright Patterson AFB area on Sunday morning; myself, hubby, three sons, and mother- and father-in-law. They had a nice “Call to Duty” ceremony on Sunday afternoon followed up with a dinner for family, friends, and soldiers at the armory. Ok, so they pretty much ran out of all food before we got through the buffet. That’s what we get for being at the end of the line. McDonald’s never tasted so good as it did later that evening. …
