Another Barrier Broken! The X-51A, Waverider Reaches Mach 5! DoD Roundtable: I love aircraft, any kind of aircraft, especially new aircraft and the Air Force Research Laboratory’s most recent effort is no exception. The X-51A Waverider, a hypersonic flight test demonstrator built by a team from the Air Force, Boeing, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Navy had a successful flight on May 26th! Hypersonic flight is described as Mach 5, five times the speed of sound! …

DoD Certifies 6 Programs Under Nunn-McCurdy Law Breaches: The Department of Defense has certified that six acquisition programs – including the Joint Strike Fighter and the DDG-1000 destroyer – should continue under Nunn-McCurdy legislation. The systems also include the Block 3 upgrade program for the Apache AH-64 helicopter, the advanced threat infrared countermeasures/common missile warning system, the wideband global satellite communications program and the remote mine hunting system. …
World Trade Center I-beam Unveiled at Bagram: More than 200 multinational troops converged in front of the Regional Command East command building here to see an I-beam segment from the World Trade Center unveiled during a Memorial Day ceremony today. Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, and Army Maj. Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, commander of Combined Joint Task Force 82, also attended the event. …

Deployment Troubles of a 5 year-old: My five-year old is struggling. He is struggling with his father’s deployment. One and a half months down – 10 1/2 to go. This could be a long year. The two of them are close. He loves watching his dad play video games; looks for his dad’s face after every soccer goal he makes; helps his dad make an occasional dinner; hangs on every word his father says. When you talk about being a hero, Dad is up there in this little boy’s eyes. …
