Don’t watch your words, use them wisely!
We came back from a great vacation. Our bags were overstuffed, our ‘fun limit’ was about maxed out. Our spirits were high but the line to customs was ahead. It is interesting how emotions can take roller coaster rides in break neck speed. Rifling through my bags to find passport and declaration paper I approached the customs officer waiting at the desk. His first words were, “Welcome Home!” WOW!Wide eyed I looked at him and said a heart felt thank you! He meant it. I meant it. Then, after seeing my Military ID, he thanked me for my service! “I’m the spouse.” I said. He said he recognized that and…

Fruit Basket Upset
Childhood games were the best: interaction, laughter and goofiness reigned in my ‘organized fun time’. Fruit Basket Upset required at least 10 friends, names of fruits: each child picked a fruit type. Then, with one less chair we waited for the ‘it’ to call out two or three fruits – at that time up we would jump and change chairs before ‘it’ could take our spot. Perfect name and game for this time of year. Soon the Thanksgiving fruit bowl will be assembled: pineapple, pears, apples, grapes, bananas, oranges and tangerines. The table will be arranged… and usually there is one less ‘good’ chair than I would like. (NEVER too…

Apple Picking Equates to Picking More Apple Recipes
We are still crunching on Honey Crisps, Galas and a few Ida Reds. Yes, this apple season was a good one. I brought home a peck of Spies (for pies) and I see some are getting a bit ready to be used. Therefore, the oven is on and I am waiting for the Jewish Apple Cake to come out… the aroma has me watching the timer… why does it take so long? Preheat oven to 350 degrees1 cup oil3 cups flour4 eggs1 teaspoon salt1/4 cup orange juice2 cups sugar3 teaspoons baking powder2 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract Apple mix5 or 6 sliced pared and cored5 Tablespoons sugar2 teaspoons cinnamon Prepare…

Words of Wisdom… Wish I Said Them First
Watch your thoughts, they become your words.Watch your words, they become your actions.Watch your actions, they become your habits.Watch your habits, they become your destiny. Simple truths can be like a map to our daily plans of action. Gems of wisdom lend a light to the steps we take. How nice to have words fitly spoken that are like apples of gold in pictures of silver (Kings Solomon) These would be much easier to eat.. if it came to that! Hope your day is filled with promise, support and interaction with those who can help you… and with those to whom you can uplift.byDeborahonWednesday, October 15, 2008Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare…

Pocketful of Apples
A cold snap came and turned our maples and oaks from green giants into jewel dressed wonders. Right now, a steady breeze is filtering those crimson and gold leaves and sending them spiraling sideways with many skidding onto our deck. It is a sight to behold. Landscaping has become a pure pleasure for Dale and I. He put up a split rail fence that has added a framework to this fall picture outside while I planted vinca under and in front which adds a dark green matting for our portrait. At the end of the day, muscles were talking and our sweet tooth chattered! A basket of apples announced it…

Crisp Air… Apple Crisp
The apple orchards call. They do. Apples to be picked, the long rows of Jonathons, honey crisps, Ida reds and so on just needed to be revisited… and we trooped home with a different variety in the newest bushel: ‘Spies for Pies’. Crisp and juicy, these apples are terrific for snacking and for baking. I love using them in the recipe that represents fall baking: Apple Crisp. The aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg do a frontal attack on the senses followed by the visual of hot bubbling brown sugar and apple juices. Yes, this is just one reason to celebrate the seasons!I love to have an equal amount of crisp…

A Fall Season Leisure Activity for a Military Family
As we get started back into a fall routine with school and jobs we sometimes look for things to do in the nice fall weather. Finding leisure time activities for the family on the weekend can be quite the adventure for a military family in a new area! It may be a bit cooler and the beach or pool are not as inviting unless you are living in a very southern climate. As a military family it was always interesting to invade a new area and see what surprises they had for us. A great time for us in our newest location is apple picking! We have several orchards nearby…

Hiking Avalanche Lake Trail in Glacier National Park
This summer we went to Montana for a niece’s wedding in Great Falls. We had a wonderful family time at the wedding and tacked on a few extra days to spend at Glacier National Park! What a great place to hike and the views were tremendous! We are so blessed with National Parks and this one was gorgeous! Our niece had worked up in the park for a time and gave us her favorite trail to hike–Avalanche Lake; so off we went after a bit of map research. We found out that the trail was about 2.5 miles one way and of course it was above 5,000 feet (thin air…
