Using Your GI Bill? What You Should Look for in a College or University!
Recently I had an interesting request from a respected university that is on several military installations. What would you recommend for a college seeking to improve its veteran outreach? I spent some time before the meeting to relive my experiences and look at current issues and came up with some brainstorm ideas for them! Now I’d like to turn these ideas around for our readers who are considering going back to school, getting a new degree or using their GI Bill to expand job opportunities after their service time! To be the best prepared student and get the best return on your dollar (a lot of blood, sweat and tears,…

Volunteer Appreciation Week – DoD Roundtable
The American spirit! We see it all around us! Did you know this week was Volunteer Appreciation Week? Who do you think are America’s best volunteers? I give a vote for our all volunteer armed forces involved in three wars that began 10 years ago and yet we still have a force that makes its recruitment and re-enlistment goals each year! How about the American military family? They sacrifice so much and work so hard to take care of themselves and still find time to volunteer and support their communities! During my times as a military leader and even now I realize that many of the on the installation organizations…

The Big Metal Tube
“I was in the tube for more than 2 hours. Going in the technicians did their preflight, got their gear all set up and the passenger (me) was ready to fly.” Life experiences make us who we are. Blessed with a career flying Air Force aircraft (11 of them) for 30 years I was not really ready to retire but certainly did not miss the middle of the night calls from the command post, late nights, long days, extensive tdy schedule and many other minor irritants. What I did miss was the aircraft. My last aircraft was a C-17 and standing in the aircraft it looks like a big metal…

America Does Support Our Troops!
I am a Vietnam era Veteran and an Afghanistan era veteran and everything in between as well! I remember the 60s and 70s and I so appreciate how America is now recognizing and supporting our men and women and their families! We see thousands of small businesses on MilitaryAvenue with a military discount and a sense of pride and patriotism among our citizens when talking about veterans. Access to schools during Veterans Day and other events, neighbors helping military families and appreciation for the sacrifices they and their families are making. A ground swell is growing and we are seeing it amongst corporations as well. Corporate America is participating in…

Recognition… In the Neighborhood
As the daughter and wife of two very-selfless veterans I just want to thank all of the companies that are coming out in /my/ neighborhood to support the troops. As Veterans Day approaches I am so grateful for the appreciation that is shown to a group of people I care so much about! Year RoundWe are now frequent customers of Lowes and Home Depot as they offer 10% off to Active Duty / National Guard / Reserves year-round. If a company is going to support us as a military family, then I want to support them! (And by-george we can appreciate 10% off of all of the constant-DIY home repairs…

“Far reaching, devastating, … biggest challenge is scale of disaster” is how U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Michael Nagata, deputy commander, Office of the Defense Representative, Pakistan described the flooding in Pakistan during this mornings Roundatable! I was privileged to speak with him and hear how the US is again helping out during a disaster. Medical Care in Afghanistan – DoD Roundtable
This DoD Roundtable was perfectly timed for me! We were scheduled to participate and talk with U.S. Air Force Col. Schuyler K. Geller, command surgeon and commander, Medical Training Advisory Group at Camp Eggers, NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan/Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan. But earlier in the week I had to have some last minute, unscheduled foot surgery and did not know if I could attend. But the schedule did work out and after my very recent personal experience while being treated, I talked to Col Geller with an up to date appreciation for the wonderful abilities of our medical team in the United States (and medications to help reduce pain as well)!…
