Care Package Ideas
Find more Care Package Ideas and muchmore from MilitaryAvenue on Pinterest I really enjoyed a blog post from the DoD’s Family Matters blog and wanted to be sure to share it with you. These are some great ideas for a wife, daughter, sister, friend that is deployed but you can always take the thought and apply it to your loved-one. [Like I’m thinking if I sent my husband curtains and a comforter he would have been more ‘annoyed’ then appreciative… but maybe that’s just my hubs ;)] The following are some care package items I found especially awesome while I was deployed:– A stack of 11×17 landscape prints from a…

I am continually amazed at the strength of the military-spouse! This week’s ‘Face Behind the Hero’ is another wonderful example of wit and wisdom; spice and life; juggler of so many hats! What a wonderful opportunity she has given us to see just a glimpse of her thoughts as a navy-wife. Thank you, Ally. Thank you to all of the military-spouses out there holding up the homefront. What branch is your husband in? Navy How long has he been in? 11 years How long have you been married? Thankful Thursday: A HOT LONG Shower
I got this email from my son’s preschool (I abbreviated names for purpose of OPSEC). The ‘big school’ referenced is the main-school which is grades K-8. My son is part of the preschool, which is ages 3 – 5… This week in the “big school”, the students have been doing many different projects for Haiti. This has included hourly prayers, fasting and almsgiving. We would like the preschoolers to participate in a service project for Haiti as well, and we have found a project to help one of our own. As many of you know, JM, Mrs M’s husband, is a member of the United States Coast Guard. His unit was activated and…

Clearing the Roads in Afghanistan the “Houn Dawg” Way – DoD Roundtable
The DoDLive Bloggers Roundtable met with Lt. Col. Tony Adrian and Command Sgt. Maj. Steven Stuenkel of the 203rd Engineer Battalion, the Houn Dawgs, a Missouri Army National Guard unit. The battalion as currently manned in Afghanistan is primarily an Army National Guard unit with active Army and Army Reserve components. The Command Sgt Maj. Said they had had more volunteers than positions for the deployment and the Missouri Guard is manned at 112% of its end strength right now! The unit was deployed to Iraq twice prior to this deployment which started in October. According to their press release, the Houn Dawgs have a proud history whose mission in…

The Power of Reading
I’ve written a couple of times about the power of a book! When hubs was deployed we got a few books through the “United Through Reading” program sponsored by the USO. Hubs read books to the boys from Iraq, recorded on a DVD, and mailed to us. The boys received a DVD & book to read along with Dad, the opportunity to hear Dad’s voice and find the pleasure in a book. In fact, my boys enjoyed the books so immensely that I ordered a few Scholastic books through their school and included them in ‘care packages’ to Hubs. He could then make his own books-on-DVD to send back to…

Care Packages & the USO
My deployed-Hubby is quite frequently asked by family & friends for things he might want sent to him in care-packages. He has told me on several occasions that they just don’t have a lot of room out there. His ‘choo’ (aka room) doesn’t have a lot of room & the Army does take pretty good care of their food-needs. I frequently ask what was for dinner and it sounds like the Army has come A LONG WAY from the days of *MASH* and their chow-hall. Apparently they have quite a few ‘critters’ over there. This was news to me. I think of the desert and I think of cactus, lizards…

Father’s Day from Afar
Father’s Day is this Sunday – talk about creating a void for our family going through our first deployment. I’m sure the void will be felt all across the globe on the 15th. I fortunately have stayed on top of this one (I’m not on top of much lately). Hubby’s care-package is in the mail & he should be receiving it any day now. I hope it oozes with love! (As opposed to oozing with sticky-melted chocolate!) I’m not great at ‘themes’, maybe with some practice I will get there… but for now the theme is simply: “From Us” 🙂 A letter from our oldest, 14; Some pictures from our…

Here is to the new year!
Welcome 2008! This year brings many changes with it for my household of five. In 2008 my youngest will start preschool, my middle child will start kindergarten and my oldest high school. All of this while my husband is on his first deployment. That is the change I look least forward to. So what is my new years resolution this year? To remain positive! However, I don’t want to be positive just on the outside but on the inside too. Here are some simple ideas to start with and I can’t wait for the list to grow: Enjoy the moments with my husband while he is home Plan a family…
