Small Business Saturday: November 24, 2012

    November 20, 2012 /

I am really intrigued by this idea of “Small Business Saturday”. The premise is the Saturday after Thanksgiving you go to your local family-owned, small business stores to do your Christmas Shopping.I got this ‘chain email from my mother-in-law a couple weeks ago.  Usually I immediately hit delete on chains.  I get over 100 emails a day so the delete key is my friend.  But this one caught my eye and hits right along the Small Business Saturday concept: As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods — merchandise that has been produced at the expense…

    T-Shirt to Beach Bag

    July 11, 2012 /

Over the years I have accumulated a few t-shirts.  They are an easy souvenir, a great way to remember a great time.  However, over the past 20 something years I have accumulated a drawer full of shirts I never wear.  I hate the thought of parting with them. I refuse to throw them away.  I know if I gave them away they would /never/ be appreciated like I appreciate them ;). So my interest was piqued when I saw this simple-idea on Pinterest, where by turning t shirts into shopping bags (great for the environment!).  This is not hard and it a great re-use of shirts I never wear. I was really happy with the results and…

    Craft Stick Fun

    April 18, 2012 /

A simple art project.  Simple smiles.  Simply fun! As my boys are getting older projects at school have grown more and more complex.  In the process I have picked up a few art-project supplies kept tucked away for a rainy day.  Popsicle sticks were needed for a diorama of Iceland.  Pipe cleaners were needed for a science experiment involving borax.  Markers are kept out of reach of a toddler.  Glue, scissors and paper all quickly rounded up.  All this is the the perfect making for a morning of fun. My friend, *L*, 4 years old, checked out a book from the library last week, “Craft Stick Mania”.   Today we set ourselves up at…

    A Very Special Valentine’s Day

    February 6, 2012 /

Today we are happy to share a guest post from Maya Szydlowski, community manager for Veterans United Home Loans: Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and for moms with kiddos that means trying to round up cards and candies for your kids to hand out to their classmates. While grabbing a classroom list is no hard task, trying to get your kids to simply scrawl names on cards can be a little more difficult as the work hardly keeps their attention. To make Valentine’s Day a little more fun and creative for both you and your kiddos this year, consider giving a few of the following craft ideas a…

Attainable Goals and the Sky-Blue Hue of Celery

    January 6, 2012 /

It started as a simple experiment.  My four-year old neighbor was over and she had never done the ‘celery experiment’.  Imagine that!  So I dug in my produce drawer and pulled out two stalks.  We put a piece in each cup and then added food dye to the water.  Red and blue.  We watched them through the day and we saw the change.  We noticed how the celery was drinking the water as the celery turned from green to a shade of the color of its water.  We talked about the importance of drinking and how, yes, even plants drink.  Her eyes were widened at this thought.  Then my mind started spinning…

    I have a confession to make …

    December 27, 2011 /

I have a confession.  I love being organized.  You wouldn’t really know it when you walk in to my house.  We have had the pleasure of living in the same house for 10 years. (Clearly, I’m a National Guard spouse and not Active Duty.)  In those ten years my eight-year old step son has turned 18.  I have given birth to three boys.  My husband has grown his own private-practice and works 15 hour days.  I’m quite sure the family plots daily against my need to be organized. My junk drawer has spawned and over-taken three drawers in my kitchen.  It is bad.  My basement some how became a great place to (quite literally)…

#79 of 101 Ways to Thank a Veteran: Send a Christmas Card

    December 14, 2011 /

Have you read 101 Ways to Thank a Veteran? They were written with Veterans Day in mind but many for all year round. 79. Remember Veterans during other holidays, especially those without family. Send a Thanksgiving card, Christmas card or Valentines card, to either a Vet that you know or through a VA Hospital or VFW.– http://www.militaryavenue.com/ways_to_thank_veteran Last night after dinner, we cleared the dishes, did our usual cleanup routine and then I pulled out the craft supplies.  Glitter, paint, glue, markers, stock-paper and oh so much more Time to make Christmas Cards for a special Veteran in my life, my Grandfather (and Grandmother).   They are far from family, not…

A Minute out of the Norm: Painted Candle Holders

    October 28, 2011 /

There is something about a candle in Autumn.  Even a small flame gives off heat as we adjust to new temperatures outside.  Something as simple as looking at a warmly-lit candle can heat me up from the inside out.  Temperatures have fallen here in NE Ohio and my neighbor friend and I enjoyed a craft that can be enjoyed of all ages, from 4 years old to 37 and older. What you will need: A glass jar.  We used two mason jars that I have used for canning garden veggies in previous years.  You can also make smaller candle holders with baby-food jars.  This is a great job for recycling…
