Personal Goals
New Years Resolutions. A yearly tradition. A list we come up with to make us feel good, look good but easy to forget all about come March or April. So instead of New Years Resolutions I have come with a list of Personal Goals. I make them and keep them for my work-life at MilitaryAvenue.com. It makes sense to do lay them out in my personal life; not just a way to make me feel better or look better but a means of lifting myself up. These are five of my personal goals for this year: 1. Stay in better touch with my grandparents. Send Pop an email every week. Send a letter to…

“Let’s Move” How Healthy Are You and Your Military Family? – DoD Roundtable
We see it everyday! Sometimes in our own mirror, in family members, at the Exchange, at church/chapel, around town, while visiting family and at the doctor’s office: Many Americans including our children are overweight! We need to get active! The “Let’s Move” campaign is a national effort to improve our health and we need to get going! As the military order goes, “Move Out” on this one! “She said the campaign was focusing on three targets: Diet, Activity and Screen Time.” I am encouraged by the interest of our country’s leaders taking a stand because this is becoming a health care issue with record numbers of childhood diabetes, adult onset…

Worry and Its Diminishing Return
Real difficulties can be overcome, it is only the imaginary ones that are unconquerable. – Theodore N. Vail This week BabyBoy *L* broke out in a terrible rash. It started on Wednesday morning and I decided to not overreact as I feel I so often do. He wasn’t overly-fussy or scratching at himself. Simply, his body had broken out in hives /everywhere/; from the top of his head to his ankles, around his arms and in all of the folds of his skin. I knew he had his well-baby, 6 month, checkup on Friday and thought, eh, he’s fine. We will make it to Friday. It was taking everything in…

A Breastfeeding Journey
WE did it! By “We” I mean BabyBoy *L* and me! In just a few weeks he will be six-months old and aside from a few sips of formula (promptly spit out on his part) he has been exclusively breastfed. Can I tell you how much I have enjoyed this journey?! (Thanks, then I will.) I tried with my other two. *E* my first born was a colicky-mess… or maybe it was just me that was a mess? But he would cry for hours and at about six-weeks old consistently had blood in his diaper. I /tried/ to cut out all cow’s milk from my diet at the recommendation of…

Savoring the Moment
I have a confession … I am at the tail end of my third pregnancy (at just about 37 weeks) and I am NOT ready to be done. I mean I’m ready to meet our little BabyBoy. I’m ready to take a load off my feet. I’m ready to stop having to take insulin and being on a very strict diet for gestational diabetes. I’m really ready to not be sweating buckets just from sitting. But I know this is my last pregnancy. I’m over 35 and pregnancy has been hard on my body (this one in particular.) So I’m savoring moments. I’m savoring a foot jabbing me in the…

New Year Resolution Resources
The time of year is quickly coming upon us when many of us start to think about how we can better ourselves during the new year. To start thinking about any changes I might want to make in 2010, I pulled this article out of MilitaryAvenue’s archives: “The American Psychiatric Association Offers Tips for Attaining Your New Year’s Resolutions“. Here are some more great articles that might be of interest as we start setting goals: Staying Healthy:Why I take walks for the New YearEat Healthy Your Way From the Commissary: Special recipes for our Veterans – Cooking for 1 or 2 Look for Smart Choices in Your Commissary Mom’s “Li’l…

Oh the trauma…
Warning: for the squeemish I do have a pretty graphic picture below, involving a bit of blood. All in the ‘day in the life’ of a boy… but not exactly a pretty picture. Hubby can not get home a day too soon! My six year-old missed school on Thursday and Friday due to a pretty rotten cold and temperature ranging from 99 to 103 throughout the day & night. So our days have just been messed up. Unfortunately, on Friday night I started to feel the same way; achy, hot yet shivering, with a major headache. I love it when the kids share, but they don’t need to share their…

New Year Fitness Goals
We all made it through the holidays and I believe the average weight gain for Americans is 5 pounds. Of course, all of us have started our new efforts or renewed efforts to lose weight or maybe the plan has already been abandoned? It’s real hard to keep up a workout or weight loss goals without a plan and changes to your lifestyle. The biggest change ever for me was planning as a couple. We found a way to change the way we thought about food, exercise and lifestyle. We now exercise together at least three times a week and many of our spring through fall activities are outdoor in…

Cool Creamy Gooey Crunchy Chocolate Delight
At our house I have tried to steer away from desserts. Sugar is something that neither Dale nor I need in our diet. Dale has type 2 Diabetes (even though he is the thin man), and I just don’t need that rush. However… put some chocolate in front of me, or within 17 miles, and I feel the desire! This recipe is a poor excuse for cutting back on sugar, but it has good intentions!?! This is a great dessert to take to a coffee, or a squadron party. This serves 15, so if you make it for the home crowd, there is going to be plenty! There is a crunchy…
