    Operation Stay Young

    January 30, 2014 /

So we are a month in to our New Years Resolutions or Goals.  How are you doing?  I’m feeling pretty good.  Hubs bought me a pedometer, a basic Fit-Bit, for Christmas and it has been a wonderful motivator for me.  It reminds me if I want to meet my goal by the end of the day I need to move.  That may mean doing a little running in place while I fold laundry, having a mid-afternoon dance party in the kitchen with the kids (making sure I move my feet to keep those steps going) or just a couple extra jogs up and down our steps.  For me it’s the…

    Girlfriends

    September 24, 2013 /

Ah vacation … what is meant to be a great time to get away can be so very stressful. Especially those hours leading up to a trip.  Packing the van for a family trip is my personal hell.  Setting the expectation that my husband will help me when I want him to help me always leaves me… disappointed, frustrated, misunderstood. To say my husband works hard is an understatement.  That I get.  Let’s put it this way, vacation is scheduled to start today (like at 0800) and he is at work.  There was nothing he could do about that fact.  I have accepted that because flexibility is the name of the…

    Taking Life by the Reins

    August 13, 2013 /

It was going to be a long week without my main squeeze.  Hubs had JAG training at Fort Belvoir for a week and I knew for sure we would miss him.  Truth is, it’s hard when your best friend leaves, even if only for a week.  (And yes, I have done the year long deployment… but that’s not my point.  Sometimes, I miss him when he is only sitting in the other room.  Get it?) When he proposed that we tag along I admit I was a bit nervous at first.  Tag along?  Hang out in a hotel with the kids all week? Hit DC with just me and the kids, tackling…

5 Practical Ways to Save Money on Groceries

    February 28, 2013 /

    1. Make a list.  I know, time and time again you hear it.  “Make a list and stick to it.”  But writing a list on scarp paper and then losing that paper isn’t going to help.  Instead make the list practical.  I like using technology and since my phone is usually in the kitchen on the dock, it is very practical to keep my list there.   The free app that I use, is Grocery Pal but there are dozens of list apps out there.  I add items when I need them, when I start to run low, when I know it is time to restock.  I love that after I buy…

Awkward! Junior High Time to Step Forward

    February 21, 2013 /

Junior High School… a wonderfully awkward time of life! Who are these kids?        Adults… no.        Little kids… no. On any given day they act like either one… or give an hour and they are flipping the switches and are both. This was the first time in my life that I moved: changed school districts, changed me! I walked into the new school literally a head taller than any other girl and had that raw feeling of ”who in the world am I?”          Clueless. Tonight in our Junior High Youth Group we are going to be talking about a timeline. Gaging where they were, where they are going and perhaps…

Money Saving Idea: Getting Comfortable in the Kitchen

    January 22, 2013 /

Throughout the next month the focus is going to be on saving money.  No pressure on my part as that leads to nothing but guilt, and therefore failure.  However, when I do find myself doing ‘the right thing’ I want to focus on it and think about how I can make it that much better.  (My motto, “Little Drops of Awesome“) There will be a lot of trust.  Trust that this focus is important, necessary, part of managing the household.  It helps with some of the stress on my marriage.  It helps me feel like a better manager of God’s provisions.  Money doesn’t bring happiness but I’d sure like to try peace…

    Raising a Generation that Loves

    December 17, 2012 /

Today Newtown, Conneticut will bury the first of their children.  Noah Pozner, age 6, will be laid to rest at 1:00pm. (Newtown shooting victims: First funerals to be held) Then there will be 19 more funerals for children and 7 for adults.  Oh deep sorrow runs through my blood. My husband, the level headed soldier who has seen more then I would like to imagine, came home on Friday and immediately turned on the news.  He watched for a quite a while, standing there stunned.  Then the man who is never sick complained of a headache the rest of the night.  I don’t know if it was a headache as much…

Small Business Saturday: November 24, 2012

    November 20, 2012 /

I am really intrigued by this idea of “Small Business Saturday”. The premise is the Saturday after Thanksgiving you go to your local family-owned, small business stores to do your Christmas Shopping.I got this ‘chain email from my mother-in-law a couple weeks ago.  Usually I immediately hit delete on chains.  I get over 100 emails a day so the delete key is my friend.  But this one caught my eye and hits right along the Small Business Saturday concept: As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods — merchandise that has been produced at the expense…

    Homework Help

    September 9, 2012 /

From Kindergarten through High School, homework is a recurring theme through the school year, usually met with loud, obnoxious groans from around the world.  If you struggle, like I do, with motivating, encouraging and helping your kids to ‘get the job done’ here are some great resources. What can Parents do to Help with Homework? As millions of children return to school, the burden of homework and new schedules can often lead to anxiety and almost certainly new amounts of stress. This is not only true for the children, but for their parents as well. Homework can be frustrating for students and for parents as well. Research shows that parents can play an…
