An Introduction: “Do You Have a Frog in your Pocket?”

    August 26, 2014 /

Last week we published a blog in our Marketing to Military resource and the business owner was so military friendly we thought that we should share it today in our Military Family blog as well.  It is a smooth read but what she says about the military community says a lot about her business. We like what she said about us too!  So, read and enjoy!  PS:  If you know a military family owned, veteran owned or military friendly business share the blog with them too!  “Do You Have a Frog in your Pocket?” Something caught my eye, increased the focus, sped up the senses a bit, made me look…

Military Spouse Employment – Critical to Quality of Life for Many

    May 16, 2014 /

…by making it easier to PCS your JOB in addition to your family and household goods! As many of you may know, the month of May is Military Appreciation Month! This year DoD began an effort to make it “31 Days of Military Spouse Appreciation” as well; to highlight their efforts to help with spouse employment.   It is not a surprise to the military community that the economy, the health insurance issues for corporations and small businesses and career transportability issues have made it harder for spouses to find jobs in new areas of the country after a PCS. MilitaryAvenue Pinterest Spouse Employment ResourcesWhen the DoD Blogger Roundtable met with…

Career Road-map for the Military Spouse

    February 4, 2014 /

a Department of Defense Roundtable  Maps are good.  Especially when you are in unknown territory.   You can reference them as you plan a trip across the country, or glance at a map (perhaps your GPS) as you make your way across town.  We need maps unless we want to wander… aimlessly. As a military spouse we often find our way into new territory.  A PCS (again), a deployment (again), a family to raise, a spouse who is quite frankly married to the _______ (fill in your branch).  When we are plotting out this course called ‘life’ and we want a career to be a part of that it often…

Preparing for the Tax Season for the Military Family

    December 3, 2013 /

WASHINGTON, Dec. 3, 2013 – With a month left before the start of tax season, service members should begin gathering documentation to file their 2013 taxes, the director of the Pentagon’s office of family policy and children and youth said. In a recent interview with American Forces Press Service and the Pentagon Channel, Barbara Thompson suggested visiting the Military OneSource website for tax filing resources, and to learn what will be necessary to file, such as W2 forms, Social Security numbers and receipts for deductions such as child care, education, medical expenses and donations, among other write-offs. Inspiration for Veterans Day > A Critically Wounded Hero and His Wife Speak Up

    November 8, 2013 /

As Veterans Day approaches my thoughts (and I am guessing many Americans as well) frequently go to images of World War II veterans, local veteran recognition, parades, corporate efforts for veteran employment announcements and images of Arlington National Cemetery. CPT Edward Klein and wife Jessica  See below for photo creditThe wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have created a new focus on veterans and one that often (thankfully) includes the wounded heroes who will bear the scars, invisible injuries and lost limbs of war. Captain Edward Klein, US Army, a triple amputee due to an IED attack in Afghanistan, and his wife Jessica joined the DoD Blogger Roundtable to discuss their…

    Universities that Support our Veterans

    July 10, 2013 /

I read a recent article about two universities that ‘get it’. Rutgers University and the University of Arizona; The Lumina Foundation highlighted them in their recent magazine, you can read more here: Lumina Foundation Features Two Colleges for Their Work Serving Student Veterans; America Needs More Vets with Degrees to Meet Attainment Needs Just think, only three years ago Rutgers didn’t have any type of Veterans Program and now they are receiving national recognition.  It goes to show you don’t have to jump through hoops to make it happen you just need to make a plan and stick to it! I love support like this for our Veterans and I certainly…

Happy Military Spouse Day! Let’s Talk Jobs for Spouses > DoD Blogger Roundtable

    May 10, 2013 /

Do you remember… What a great day! Celebrating the contributions of military spouses to their families, services and country! A special shout out to my favorite military spouses > MilAve_Deborah and MilAve_Leanne. Immense contributions at that but I digress from the purpose of this blog which is to announce how much progress can be said for military spouse employment and provide “How To” tools to help! When the DoD Blogger Roundtable met yesterday afternoon there was no big announcements, no laudatory pats on the back, just continued improvement of tools that military spouses can use to find gainful employment or continued success in their choice of careers. The top item…

Today’s Teachers: Frontline of Defense for Military Children

    April 23, 2013 /

Today’s Guest Post is from Levi Newman of Veterans United Network  Today’s military children have to adapt to more stressorsthan ever before. Their parents are deployed more frequently and many kidschange schools anywhere from four to twelve times during the course of theirparents’ military service. It’s a stress many outside the military are unfamiliar with, especially teachers. The biggest service we can offer to these children andtheir teachers is to preparethem both for these transitions. And while the children can ask theirparents how to prepare for these changes, who is there for the teacher? You may be thinking, “What does a teacher need to know aboutthe child’s move?” Well, it really depends…

    Tutor.com for Military Families

    April 10, 2013 /

My poor blessed children. When I was a child I wanted to be a teacher.  The need to teach is somehow still ingrained in my bones. Now the need to teach and the need to see my children succeed are intertwined.  We finished up Spring Break last week and much to their groans and moans we did 30 minutes of reading and 30 minutes of education… EVERY DAY of break.  “BUT MOM we are on vacation”“BUT MOM we would rather be playing”“BUT MOM …” Didn’t matter. For us education was either time spent on some workbooks I had stored in the closet, time on  educational website I had approved, or doing some creative…
