    Operation Stay Young

    January 30, 2014 /

So we are a month in to our New Years Resolutions or Goals.  How are you doing?  I’m feeling pretty good.  Hubs bought me a pedometer, a basic Fit-Bit, for Christmas and it has been a wonderful motivator for me.  It reminds me if I want to meet my goal by the end of the day I need to move.  That may mean doing a little running in place while I fold laundry, having a mid-afternoon dance party in the kitchen with the kids (making sure I move my feet to keep those steps going) or just a couple extra jogs up and down our steps.  For me it’s the…

Active Living in the US Navy Even Has an IPhone App! DoD Blogger Roundtable

    May 8, 2013 /

“They have an IPhone App for their program…” Spring seems to be a great time to get started on new workout plans, healthier eating, gardens and more! May is even designated as physical fitness and sports month so it was great timing for the DoD Blogger Roundtable to discuss the US Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling System and some new and better ways to help stay healthy! As a long time advocate for a healthy lifestyle I was very interested in the topic but wanted to make sure that it would be interesting for our followers. Diana Strock, Physical Fitness and Injury Prevention Program Manager said they had “resounding feedback”…

    Where is Your Gym?

    January 4, 2013 /

Motivation and goals are keys to a healthy lifestyle; we read so much about physical fitness around this time of the year. New Year’s resolutions come and sometimes they are gone before the end of January. Some are even made and then forgotten before they are started. For many they include, “I will go the gym this many times (X) a week”. Grinda joined me on my workout today! But physical fitness can be much easier than heading off to the gym and two of the biggest challenges are the time and location issue. Do you have time to get ready, drive to the gym, find the right equipment? Or maybe…

US Navy Health Promotion and Wellness – DoD Blogger Roundtable

    October 3, 2012 /

When we see images of our military community we see a young, vibrant and healthy group of Americans. But realistically our vision may be wrong. The Department of Defense spends $1 Billion per year on weight management, many still smoke and health and wellness are hot topics among the defense medical community and leaders. Talking health! See Below for Photo CreditYesterday Cmdr. Denise Gechas, Director of Population Health, Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC) met with the Blogger Roundtable (BRT) to discuss the launch of the Navy’s health and wellness campaign. She was in Norfolk for the launch and the roundtable asked her about the campaign and she…

    Financial Fitness in 2012

    January 19, 2012 /

Welcome to a new year, military-families! We have so much ahead of us to look forward to: family time to spend, PCSs to plan, houses to buy, vacations to save for, retirements to plan for, new babies for some and others are sending our babies off to college (Yes, I would fall into that category). 2012 is going to be a great year!Did you make any New Years Resolutions, or I would rather call Personal Goals? How is that going? My big one this year is to get my home more organized. You can read more about that journey and steps I am taking on our blog ‘Our Letters to…

“Let’s Move” How Healthy Are You and Your Military Family? – DoD Roundtable

    April 20, 2011 /

We see it everyday! Sometimes in our own mirror, in family members, at the Exchange, at church/chapel, around town, while visiting family and at the doctor’s office: Many Americans including our children are overweight! We need to get active! The “Let’s Move” campaign is a national effort to improve our health and we need to get going! As the military order goes, “Move Out” on this one! “She said the campaign was focusing on three targets: Diet, Activity and Screen Time.” I am encouraged by the interest of our country’s leaders taking a stand because this is becoming a health care issue with record numbers of childhood diabetes, adult onset…

An Interview with Army Command and General Staff College Students – DoD Roundtable

    April 14, 2010 /

I enjoyed talking to and asking questions of five majors attending the Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Ft Leavenworth concerning the changes to the curriculum at Army basic training this afternoon. I spoke with Majors Dugger, Register, Grubbs, Butler and Favor. I hope I have spelled all your names correctly! During this DoD Bloggers Roundtable the officers communicated well and had a lively discussion about weapons training and other changes during basic (See US Army Initial Military Training – DoD Roundtable with LTG Mark Hertling for an earlier discussion of changes at basic training). The field grade officers confirmed that the changes mentioned by LTG Hertling were…

    New Year Fitness Goals

    January 15, 2009 /

We all made it through the holidays and I believe the average weight gain for Americans is 5 pounds. Of course, all of us have started our new efforts or renewed efforts to lose weight or maybe the plan has already been abandoned? It’s real hard to keep up a workout or weight loss goals without a plan and changes to your lifestyle. The biggest change ever for me was planning as a couple. We found a way to change the way we thought about food, exercise and lifestyle. We now exercise together at least three times a week and many of our spring through fall activities are outdoor in…
