To everything there is a season.
To everything there is a season, and with Lent here, fish – well seasoned is a celebration unto it’s self. While living in Florida we had what we thought was an unending supply of red snapper available to us. This white fish was easy to adapt to all favorite recipes. It broiled, grilled and baked to perfection. And best of all, when we went out on a party boat with a crowd of folk, we brought home a cooler full of this bounty. The results: invitations to the neighbors for back yard feasts! We did love Florida!Cod can easily be a great substitute for snapper. It too is firm and stands…

Household Penny Pinching from the House Guy!
Household Penny Pinching We owned homes while on active duty but spent a lot of time in military housing too as we moved so many times. One of the challenges of post military living has been household expenses and budgeting. We chose to live near family in a cold winter environment with a propane tank due to our country lifestyle. As we try to control electrical and propane bills we also saw the rise of fuel prices so it became critical to maintaining our costs. We like to travel and needed to see what we could do to save precious resources. We also saw it as a way to decrease…

Does a Better Burger have to be Bigger?
Company is coming… short notice. Time to dig into the freezer and see what the storehouse holds. Yeah for ground chuck, ground round, 93% lean beef – Hamburgers! Folks are hungry… it’s raining/snowing/ugly outside. Therefore, the grill outside is out of the question. Pull out the large frying pan and with 2 T. of olive oil, saute 2 onions sliced thin. Move the onions in the pan to the sides, and place 4 burgers next to each…

Life is a Party Complete with Food, Laughter and Chatter
I think Life is a party… sometimes you are invited in, and sometimes you crash in… although oft times the escape door is missing from the picture too. So, at this party, there has to be some good eats. To me, party preparation ranks right up there with party celebration. And with any party, there needs to be invested a star performance dish. This one wins hands down. The smell of the barbeque, the chance to use an oversized fun dish and the taste of this entrée is fantastic. London BroilMeat cut options:*Flank Steak, a less tender beefcut – but if done very rare, can be excellent*Top Round Steak(6 pounds…

A Minute Out of the Norm: Lunch
Today at lunch my boys asked for one of their favorite foods … Grilled Cheese Sandwiches! MMMMM…. one of my favorites too! It ranks up there as one of my favorite ‘comfort foods’! But really what isn’t good with cheese on it?!?! Just to mix up the ‘standard fare’ today though I cut the sandwiches a little bit different. A few years ago, I had bought some heart shaped pancake ‘shapers’. (Ok, I don’t know officially what they are called.) You pour the batter into them on the grill & they supposedly make the perfect heart-shaped pancake. I must have been feeling ambitious when I did buy them because really…
