A Gold Star Mom Speaks Up! DoD Blogger Roundtable

    August 23, 2013 /

Staff Sergeant Carter  See Photo Credit BelowStaff Sergeant Ty Michael Carter will receive the Congressional Medal of Honor on Monday, August 26th for heroism at Combat Outpost Keating, Afghanistan on Oct. 3, 2009. There were eight soldiers from Carter’s unit killed during a ferocious battle that day. Pfc. Stephan Mace was one of them and his mother, Vanessa Adelson, has chosen to speak up to the American public about this story to highlight the sacrifices that are being made by the military community. The Gold Star community often serves quietly as Leanne noted earlier this week in her blog, “The Gold Star Family and Our American Flag“. Vanessa Adelson wants…

The Gold Star Family & Our American Flag

    August 20, 2013 /

This past weekend was out of this world.   Boating, Bike Riding, Ga-Ga Ball, Campfire & S’mores, and much more, all wrapped in time spent as a family.  A huge thank you to Ohio’s Operation Military Kids and the USO for supporting programs like Military Family Camp.  This was top-notch support!  I desperately want to share more about the weekend but need to take the time to share this solemn moment and give it its due “time in the spotlight”. In our group of about 50 there were three Gold-star families, enjoying the weekend just like the rest of us.  On Sunday morning a Gold-Star Dad and his three grandsons, one being a Gold-Star…

A True Hero,Spc. Frederick Greene! Why is the Army still calling Ft Hood Attack, “Workplace Violence”?

    August 16, 2013 /

The Purple HeartFort Hood attack was “Workplace Violence”? Why?  Are you kidding me?  I have to admit this is an emotional issue for the military community and being part of that community it hit me hard when the “terrorist attack” occurred at Ft Hood in 2009.  Watching the story of the court martial of the terrorist while he continues to draw his salary as a US Army soldier is just disgusting.  Compare that to the families of those killed during the attack who have been denied many benefits because of how the Army categorized the attack!  Their pay stopped the minute that the terrorist’s bullets ended the lives of their…

    May 21, 2012 /

The Medal of Honor was posthumously awarded by the President of the United States to U.S. Army Specialist Leslie Sabo killed while saving the lives of his friends and fellow soldiers on May 10th, 1970. The Blogger Roundtable spoke with members of his company and platoon to discuss the events which led to Sabo receiving the Medal of Honor – 42 Years after he was killed.  They talked about his heroics on that day after they were ambushed in eastern Cambodia. Accepting the award was Sabo’s widow, Rose Mary Sabo-Brown. The Sabos had been married during his short leave from Advanced Infantry Training (AIT) and honeymooned during 30 days of…

Popular Military Family Articles for the week of July 10 – 16 on MilitaryAvenue.comPCS Allowances and Entitlements: Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH): is an allowance to offset the cost of housing when you do not receive government-provided housing. Your BAH depends upon your location, pay grade and whether you have dependents. BAH rates are set by surveying the cost of rental properties in each geographic location. The rates are established such that members in each pay grade, independent of location, pay approximately the same out-of-pocket expenses. … MSEP Jobs! A Split Second Decision – and a Medal of Honor! DoD Blogger Roundtable

    July 14, 2011 /

Medal Of Honor Recipient Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry and his wife Ashley“Rangers Lead the Way” We all make them – those decisions that are made in the blink of an eye. But some are more important than others, how about life changing ones? We take time to consider those? Right? Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry had a life changing decision and he only had the blink of an eye to make it in – the grenade was live, it was close and he and his fellow Rangers were going to die. His decision to pick up the Taliban’s grenade and throw it away from his team saved their lives and…

The Jolly Green Giant Arrives at the Air Force Museum

    December 16, 2010 /

The Jolly Green Giant Arrives! This week has been hectic! We traveled to see family for a Christmas gathering and then headed south to Wright Patterson AFB for a special event on Wednesday recognizing the Airmen who flew the HH-3 Jolly Green Giant! This aircraft flew rescue missions for four decades! The Air Force dedicated an aircraft, tail number 709, at the National Museum of the US Air Force at Wright Patterson AFB but what I saw were the people that cared for the old bird! As I looked around the audience the men and women were absolutely enthralled with the aircraft and as they listened to the guest speakers,…

“Remember those who gave their lives there” Korengal Valley, Afghanistan – DoD Roundtable

    November 18, 2010 /

I spoke to heroes during this Roundtable! They defended us in a remote valley in Afghanistan and in the mountains around it. They fought a battle there on October 25, 2007 that resulted in the death of friends, injuries, moments of fear and terror. The responses of one man to the combat situation he found himself in earned him the Congressional Medal of Honor! Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta is the first person to receive the MOH since the Vietnam War who could receive it in person from the President. There have been others who received our nation’s highest decoration in our wars since Vietnam but unfortunately they were posthumously presented…
