Popular Military Family Articles for the week of May 15th – 22nd on MilitaryAvenue.comThe Vietnam Wall and future generations: Memorial Day is approaching and this year my eight-year old will have a very tangible memory of what the day is about. The Vietnam Wall.  *C*, 6 years old, Hubs moving at *C*’s pace, and my dad pushing the stroller with Baby *L* were ahead of us. The area was crowded. It was full of school trips and tourists. But there was a lull from the usual noise of a ‘touristy place’. *E*, 8 years old, picked up on it right away and our pace slowed.  This, I think, is the…

Using Your GI Bill? What You Should Look for in a College or University!

    May 10, 2011 /

Recently I had an interesting request from a respected university that is on several military installations. What would you recommend for a college seeking to improve its veteran outreach? I spent some time before the meeting to relive my experiences and look at current issues and came up with some brainstorm ideas for them! Now I’d like to turn these ideas around for our readers who are considering going back to school, getting a new degree or using their GI Bill to expand job opportunities after their service time! To be the best prepared student and get the best return on your dollar (a lot of blood, sweat and tears,…

Free Tree at Lowes for Earth Day

    April 22, 2011 /

There are some companies that give back to the community over and over.  Lowes is one of my favorites!  It started with a Memorial Day and Veterans Day discount for all Veterans. It evolved to a 10% Military Discount all year for Active Duty, National Guard, Reserves and Retirees. For that alone I give them a huge THANK YOU! Now I want to thank them for giving away a million trees!  Head to your local Lowes on Saturday, April 23rd where they are celebrating Earth Day.  What a great way to to appreciate and give back to our earth.  Plant your free-gift with your children.  Talk about how important our trees are.  Discuss…

The Day after Veteran’s Day – “Real Warrior Campaign” – DoD Roundtable

    November 12, 2010 /

We had a wonderful Veteran’s Day including sharing part of my day with a grandson and his kindergarten classmates, my son took our car to a company offering free oil changes for veterans, connected with Facebook family and friends thanking us for serving and topped it off with a great dinner at a local restaurant that gave us a veteran discount (Seasonal Grille in Hastings, Michigan and the food was wonderful)! It was quite the day and then I sat down to write about the Department of Defense Roundtable I had participated in on Wednesday! It was a like a cold bucket of water being thrown in my face –…

It is even better to look around and see others smiling and bursting with pride.  I love that we commemorate and recognize the dedication, camaraderie and sacrifice of our God protected military. Many were not allowed to see the end of conflicts, many were not brought home,…
