The Army Profession, Drawdown, Army Families and more! DoD Bloggers Roundtable
Army children in youth program … see below for creditChandler said, Secretary of the Army – no cuts to Army programs for families without his specific approval. Did you know that the US Army end strength (total number of active duty soldiers) under the Defense Departments current plan and budget will be at 490,000 after the drawdown is complete? That is the loss of eight brigade combat teams and other resources (80,000 soldiers to be specific). The number of cuts seems to be a bit of a moving target as we talked just recently (December) with the DoD Blogger Roundtable and the number was 50,000! The Sergeant Major of the…

Joining Forces Christmas Cards from Military Children
As you know I am all about military support! I am the granddaughter of World War II Veterans, the daughter of an Air Force pilot and the wife of an Army Soldier. Anytime I can instill pride in my children for these generations before them I do. So I really love the idea behind Michelle Obama’s latest Joining Forces request. The First Lady is asking military children from around the globe for some personal contributions to the finishing touches on the White House decorations this holiday season. The request is for military children to submit 5×8″ handmade holiday cards with words of appreciation for their military parents, as well…

Helping a Veteran!
The Big Dead Tree … respecting the flag they fought under… The weather is getting a bit cooler, the days shorter, school has started and Fall is upon us! Veteran’s Day is fast approaching … The MilitaryAvenue team is busy preparing for Veteran’s Day with helpful articles, blogs, another Giveaway opportunity, recognizing veteran support organizations and much more during the almost two months preceding November 11th. Then I thought about how I had so much to be thankful for as a veteran. A loving wife (who moved 18 times and will celebrate a 40th anniversary in the spring) and family, a great support team of family/friends, veteran benefits, a church…

Financial Education for your Children
There is no one, perfect way to start teaching your children about finances. However, there is a wrong way and that wrong way is to ignore it and assume that they are too young, don’t need to be ‘taught’ or just feel as a parent that you aren’t up to the challenge. Start your children out on the right foot and help them learn to navigate the world of finances. You never know you might learn something along the way! Be a Role ModelHow do you pay for things? Do you buy ‘wants’ and then fuss and fret about not being able to pay for the ‘needs’? It is important to…

Month of the Military Child: Operation Paperback
This is Baby *L*. He is my pride and joy. He is the sparkle in his daddy’s eyes. He is one of the younger members of the Military-Family. Today we recieved a box of books from Operation Paperback. Some very fun pirate books for my 2nd grader, cool Batman and Scooby Doo books for my kindergartner, and very tasty board-books for Baby Boy *L*. (and so much more!) This kind of military support, from communities around the United States is what makes me humbled to be called a part of the military-family. If you are looking for a community-based way to support Military Children this Month of the Military Child look into Operation…

Popular Military Family Articles for the week of February 27th – March 5th on MilitaryAvenue.com: 5 Things to Do With Your Income Tax Refund: Your refund is coming… Your refund is coming! OK, so maybe stealing from Mr. Revere is a bit overdramatic when talking about a potential income tax refund. After all, my message won’t change the future of a nation. I am, however, OK with borrowing a bit of his attention-grabbing magic because if you are receiving a tax refund, my refund-management message could literally change the future for you. … “Gray Matter”: David began his adult life as a car mechanic. Hands on cold gears, engine valves…

Have you seen our outreach to the business community? “Marketing to the Military” is all about and for our MilitaryAvenue Business Partners, the companies that support the military-community. This morning I sent them some information about how they can support you, the military-family. But outreach like this isn’t limited to the businesses around you … You can help too! There are a lot of great organizations out there that support our military-families in times of need; from deployment-support (Armed Services YMCA), to a new baby for young parents (Operation Homefront); from wounded warrior transitions (Wounded Warrior Project), to dealing with the unexpected loss of a military-member (TAPS). Thankful Thursday: A HOT LONG Shower
I got this email from my son’s preschool (I abbreviated names for purpose of OPSEC). The ‘big school’ referenced is the main-school which is grades K-8. My son is part of the preschool, which is ages 3 – 5… This week in the “big school”, the students have been doing many different projects for Haiti. This has included hourly prayers, fasting and almsgiving. We would like the preschoolers to participate in a service project for Haiti as well, and we have found a project to help one of our own. As many of you know, JM, Mrs M’s husband, is a member of the United States Coast Guard. His unit was activated and…
