Peppers, Green, Banana, Hungarian Wax A’Plenty!
The garden just didn’t appear out there over night. And to my recollection, little gnomes haven’t been out there weeding, hoeing, rotor tilling, etc…. Especially the rotor tilling part… that machine is a monster that wants to go anywhere but where I feel is straight. (Yeah for Dale on this and so many parts of the pre-harvest work.) At the sound of our behemoth, those little gnomes would have jumped straight out of their gourds and be headed so far out of Michigan as to be fictional memories. So, maybe that’s the story! The beauty of a vegetable garden is that crops sweep in at their own pace and then demand…

Tasty Tuesday: Pesto Cheesecake
After working in the garden on a perfectly ‘perfect weather’ day, the deck chairs seems to summon us, and the idea of a simple dinner with the neighbors is about as good as it gets. IN preparation for this event… this pesto cheesecake can be made from ordinary items in the back of the refrigerator. I tend to do a commissary shopping trip and load up on essentials…so having 4 packages of cream cheese on hand is not unusual. Understand we do not live close to a commissary, so when I go… I go for carts! I hope you have the occasion to sit outside, enjoy your work and enjoy…

His Eye is on the Sparrow …
There is an old Gospel Hymn that I grew up with, ‘His Eye Is on the Sparrow’… “For His Eye is on the Sparrow … and I know He watches me.” I never put deep thought to the song until today. I’m about to get ‘preachy’ and in many ways I don’t want to “leave a bad taste” with anyone by sharing my beliefs (truly they aren’t offensive) but I do want you to know that you are cared for. We all need that reminder! Today. Hubs was out in the field. He left yesterday evening and will be home tomorrow night. Not a major stretch of time but long enough to…

Thankful Thursday: Mutual Friends
Last night was ‘Small Group’. Our church has called it many things over the years, K-Group, Home-Group, etc etc… I am partial to Small Group. A small group of friends that didn’t start out as friends, but as strangers that have grown to care about one another and a desire to be with each other. I’ve written about this wonderful group of people before. (Small Group: The Joys of Entertaining) We are all ages. Hubs and I the youngest; the oldest … I’d venture in their 50s. I’m pregnant with baby #3. Some of them are empty-nesters wondering when they will be grandparents. A few of them grew up in the…

Spring Break Fun
I love the change in routine involved with Spring Break! We have enjoyed alarm clocks off, time outdoors, moments together and later bedtimes. Time with school-aged friends, time with neighbors, time with cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles. I had a great Easter weekend at home. We enjoyed Easter church-service as a family, followed by the annual Easter-Egg hunt at Hub’s Grandma’s house involving A LOT of plastic eggs and A LOT of kids. We spent a few days enjoying the warmer-then-usual Spring weather in our backyard, planting some flower seeds, friends over to play backyard-baseball and so much more! We packed up the car mid-week and headed to my folk’s house, about a five hour drive, but well worth the time!…

What is in your Garden? – Military Family Life Question of the Week
There is stress relief for me found in getting down and getting my hands dirty. It starts in very early-Spring and extends through the beginning of Fall. I feel capable. I feel healthy. Wielding a shovel makes me even feel *a little* stronger as I work arm and leg muscles. I swear at the weeds and talk baby-talk to the very-capable vegetable plants. (I’m quite certain that’s why they ‘produce’ for us!) Summer time equals a small (yet growing every year) garden for us. This year we have: Cucumbers in abundance Peas, their season has passed, but blessed us with lots of early Spring munching Carrots that need to be…

Life in the country when the neighbor comes to visit
Here in country living, life comes and goes. It is a bit different than living on Base or on Post or any Military Installation. Economic times have hit our area hard – rather slammed it. Our neighbors are not coming, but they are going and leaving their life long project houses for others to come and build their own dreams. Our driveway left under storm clouds too. Rain riveted canyons in our gravel entrance. Dale was continually digging, laying vented pipes, gathering rocks anything to divert the flow down hill. But, down it went, and off to never never land – or into the gardens not to return to where…

Summer Time!
According to the calendar it may not technically be Summer yet. But according to the laughter, the running, the smiles we are just beginning one of my favorite seasons! So get outside. Bring the camera. Capture the moments & be sure to share them with friends and families in far-away places! Take in the season, set-up a pool (even 30-something-year-olds can enjoy an inflatable pool!), take a bike ride, have a bbq with neighbors, attend a parade, play with sidewalk chalk, go to a baseball game, pour yourself a tall glass of iced-tea. This is the season of smiles. – Leanne from MilitaryAvenue.com byLeanneonThursday, May 28, 2009Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare…

To everything there is a season.
To everything there is a season, and with Lent here, fish – well seasoned is a celebration unto it’s self. While living in Florida we had what we thought was an unending supply of red snapper available to us. This white fish was easy to adapt to all favorite recipes. It broiled, grilled and baked to perfection. And best of all, when we went out on a party boat with a crowd of folk, we brought home a cooler full of this bounty. The results: invitations to the neighbors for back yard feasts! We did love Florida!Cod can easily be a great substitute for snapper. It too is firm and stands…

Mrs Obama’s Visit to Fort Bragg
I realize I’m preaching to the choir on this one … but I was reading an article this morning about Michelle Obamas visit to Fort Bragg and it struck a chord with me. “I encourage everyone out there, within the sound of my voice, to reach out on your own — through schools, PTA, Little Leagues, churches, workplaces — and find out if there’s a soldier or a soldier’s family right there in the community who needs a little extra support,” Mrs. Obama said in her speech. “They’re there. Something as simple as offering help with car pool duty can make the world of difference to a parent who’s trying…
