Talking Turkey (leftovers) Tasty Tuesday
A crowd fills the house at Thanksgiving each year. Chairs are mixed and matched to heights of a child’s lap. Tables are added domino style… fitting this end, turning a corner with several tablecloths draped over them. My table is a center point of the Thanksgiving action for me. For me. Now, for more than half of us it is the Macy’s Day parade which spills into football. Hors d’oeuvres fill the gap from the yeasty breakfast rolls or bowls holding fruited steamy oatmeal to dinner. A steady aroma of turkey feeds an appetite that nothing else can satisfy. Our menu has turkey highlighting the table at 2 P.M. and…

Blackberry Scones. Right there, I am drooling!Warm, wet and wonderful hot out of the oven; berries popping out the sides of blackberry scones. From start to finish, these are ready to eat within the hour using everyday shelf items: with the exception of those juicy berries. We have berries growing and thriving and multiplying like 60. Dale picks them, I clean them; we eat them. Simple! Today we had oatmeal with blackberries for breakfast, a 10 o’clock snack was a blackberry muffin from last night and lunch will be a garden fresh tossed salad topped with… Yep! Blackberries, plump purple and delicious. The scone idea is new. Neighbors are coming…

Postpartum Depression
Postpartum Depression … I’ve lived it, breathed it, been held tightly in its grasp wondering when I’ll be allowed to come up for air. Eight years ago was a very dark period of my life. I did suffer from depression after my first son, Baby *E*. I spoke to my OB/GYN at my 6 week check-up and was put on an antidepressant. I am thankful for the medication but in many ways I wish there was more to it then that. I wish there was some sort of six-week required psychological counseling, not just a “be sure to see a counselor if it gets worse” from my doctor. The medication…

Peach Oatmeal Muffins
We are getting ready to go on a road trip. Dale likes to leave at 0 Dark Hundred. Earlier if he could… sigh. Driving out of our area we’ll see lots of deer (aghhh must be alert!), stars and a few farmers in the fields, but not a lot of McD’s, BK’s or anywhere that even the smell of coffee is available. So, for the first hour I pack 2 muffins and 2 travel mug of java. Have to have all the help I can to keep the eye lids UP! Last year, our farmer’s market had multiple peach booths. I bought multiple pecks of peaches. None went to waste.…

One, Two, Three: Beer Bread
It is cold outside! We had record cold, record snowfall followed by a few days of warmth and rain. That equaled flood. Across the street from us, the Thornapple River is rarely visible because the landscape holds trees, a good hill and the river is in a deep ravine. Not the case this week. The temp has dropped allowing the flood water to freeze skirts around tree trunks. As the water level descends, the skirts look like crystal picnic tables inviting small birds, owls and squirrels to rest and sit a spell. It is a beautiful time to sit high on a hill and let the sun drizzle down through…

Care Packages & the USO
My deployed-Hubby is quite frequently asked by family & friends for things he might want sent to him in care-packages. He has told me on several occasions that they just don’t have a lot of room out there. His ‘choo’ (aka room) doesn’t have a lot of room & the Army does take pretty good care of their food-needs. I frequently ask what was for dinner and it sounds like the Army has come A LONG WAY from the days of *MASH* and their chow-hall. Apparently they have quite a few ‘critters’ over there. This was news to me. I think of the desert and I think of cactus, lizards…
