You know you are a military-brat when…
April is Month of the Military Child and we have some fantastic give-aways lined up from businesses around the nation that support /you/ the military family. We will have one question for each week. Leave an answer as a comment on this blog and you are elgible to win. Our question of the week:“You know you are a military-brat when …”Source: Uploaded by user via MilitaryAvenue.com on PinterestLook at the military children around you, your own children, maybe even yourself (even at 38 years old I still am a Military-brat through and through). What makes them (or you) uniquely part of the military-community? I’ll go first: I know I am a military…

Military Family Support
I’ve been watching the news lately regarding President Obama’s call to support military-families. This support is needed! The military lifestyle affects more than the soldier, sailor, marine, or airman. I am certainly glad to see our leaders acknowledging the family! But, I also feel that government agencies aren’t the only forms, maybe even not the best forms, of support out there. The best support I have found through the years of military-living is from my family, my neighbors, other moms, other military families. People. I find support in people. Then there are other great /people/ run organizations. Like, MilitaryAvenue and all of the Partners that stand behind us! Other top…

Winter Weather Driving
Brrrr … It is cold out across the great Midwest. It is winter after all and inclement weather is to be expected! Today my family will be packing up and driving several hours to meet the two newest members of our family: Twins! a beautiful niece and nephew. But with that comes a 5+ hour drive, leaving lots of room for a bumpy ride. What do you pack in your car in case of emergency during inclement weather and possible time stuck in the car on the side of the road? On my to to-pack-in-case-of-emergency is: Blankets Hats, gloves, jackets Some candles and a lighter. (I asked this question on…

Question of the Week: Where is your happy place?
Every night at about 7:30pm we start the bed-time routine… Baths; Snacks, healthy dinners equal yummy snack; didn’t eat very well? then you get a healthy snack; Teeth brushed; Books, one book for each boy; and then finally… Bed… kisses, water-refills, lights-out, “I love you”s.And then I crawl into my happy place. My happy place is my very own bed in my own bedroom. It can be as early as 8:30 in the evening and I hastily don my pjs, brush my teeth, fluff my pillows, grab the big ol’ blue pillow that makes it easy to sit up in bed, and grab a book. What is it about my…

What is in your Garden? – Military Family Life Question of the Week
There is stress relief for me found in getting down and getting my hands dirty. It starts in very early-Spring and extends through the beginning of Fall. I feel capable. I feel healthy. Wielding a shovel makes me even feel *a little* stronger as I work arm and leg muscles. I swear at the weeds and talk baby-talk to the very-capable vegetable plants. (I’m quite certain that’s why they ‘produce’ for us!) Summer time equals a small (yet growing every year) garden for us. This year we have: Cucumbers in abundance Peas, their season has passed, but blessed us with lots of early Spring munching Carrots that need to be…

Road Trip Tunes – Military Family Life Question of the Week
There is something about a road trip and the music you listen to while driving across country. For me, it started as making mix-cassette tapes, moved onto making mix-cds over the years & now am making music-lists for my mp3 player specific to the trip we are taking. Music keeps you awake, keeps your mind moving, sets your heart & body on fire and your feet tapping. Years ago my family PCSed from northern-Virginia to Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. I was in college in Pennsylvania so they “swung by” to give kisses and hugs before making the long journey. I made them one of my favorite mix-tapes ever as a…

Military Family Life Question of the week: What is your favorite summer-picnic recipe?
Tonight I get to gather with friends and our families. It will be a casual potluck-picnic. The kids will be in the pool, splashing, laughing & loving life. The adults sitting around the deck, watching the kids, chatting, stuffing our face and enjoying a glass of wine (or two). This is summer! With summer gatherings of all sorts comes the need to bring food. We each bring a dish to share and then “mmmmmm”, “This is so good”, and chomp-chomp together. What is your favorite summer dish? Tonight I am going to make Rhubarb Delight as well as Broccoli Salad (I add fresh-peas to mine … fun to make our…

Military Family Life Question of the week: What has your favorite assignment been and why?
We all have stories being military families… stories of places we LOVED living, stories of places we weren’t so fond of. Perhaps the dust-storms in Texas just aren’t your thing or perhaps you could have done without the humidity of South Carolina. Maybe you couldn’t get enough of the history of Charleston or the free museums and cherry-blossoms in DC. This is the life of the military. It’s more than an adventure, it is life-changing! You get to see the sites, opportunities to do things you wouldn’t have had you stayed & lived in your hometown. You have expanded your world beyond borders. My favorite place was Keflavik NAS, Iceland…
