Self Esteem vs Self Respect
Last weekend was cold. Cold and rainy. The kind of weather that makes you want to curl up in front of a fire with a cup of hot chocolate and a good book. Instead I was at a soccer tournament for my ten-year old. Three games over Saturday and Sunday 90 minutes from home. Three games of pure determination on our boys’ parts. Three games of ‘Go, Avon, Go!’ … Three losses. Continue Reading about how to turn the loss into a win, Self Esteem vs Self Respect But that doesn’t necessarily make this mom sad: * The relationships that those boys are making out there on the field, the friendships…

The Man-Bag
My son has a man-bag. This sends me into fits of hysterics every time I think about it. It all started out with a dad-and-son trip to Sports Clips. You see, I am frugal. We do our best to save around here where we can, when we can. This way I can enjoy some of the ‘finer things in life’ with less guilt. (Like fulfilling my need to close the kitchen and eat out once in awhile.) As my eight-year old starts to care more and more about ‘style’ my handy-dandy clippers are failing him. (I’m sure it has everything to do with the clippers and nothing to do with my ability. Just…

A Recipe for Summer: Sun Tea
Sun Tea! My favorite drink. It is sunny skies, warm weather and the sounds of summer wrapped up and packaged in a glass jar. A few years ago I perfected my family’s favorite version of sun-tea and I thought I’d share it with you. 6 tea-bags. (I use Lipton Tea, found in an economy box of 100.)2 quarts of cold water1 two-quart glass jar. Nothing expensive required! Using your glass jar combine the ingredients and let it sit in a nice sunny-warm spot for two or three hours. My deck table is ideal. The longer you let it sit, the stronger your tea will be. So you can play with the time to see…

Staying Healthy: Headaches
I am a headache-victim, -survivor, -conqueror! I get allergy-related headaches, stress headaches and worst of all, migraines. If headaches affect you, get help: Make an appointment to see your health care provider for an accurate diagnosis. Become informed about your headache type and treatment options. I sometimes feel petty bringing up my headaches at regular doctor’s visits … but they aren’t /just/ headaches. They are a physical and mental derailments! To help with occasional tension headaches, try a warm shower, rest or relaxation techniques. Just closing your eyes for 20 minutes can help a lot. Some headaches are caused by dehydration. Many physicians recommend that you drink at least eight-ounces of…

Sea to Shining Sea… on a bicycle!
I just read about a wonderful cause, “Sea to Shining Sea”. Imagine riding your bike from San Francisco to Virginia Beach. I’m breathless just thinking about it. ‘Group of Injured Veterans to Bicycle Sea to Shining Sea — Ride Across America Led by World T.E.A.M. Sports’: “Spanning 63 days and 4,000 miles, the cyclists will test their physical limits and inspire people, disabled or not, to live active and enriched lives.” – http://www.pwrnewmedia.com/2010/statefarm_00506/index.html Needless to say I’m inspired! As you may know I am about 31 weeks pregnant with baby #3. Last week I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes… genetics had a huge play in this one for me. This…

Are You Made of the “Right Stuff” or What the Heck is a Heart Stress Test
Last week I had a heart stress test when my doctor thought it was a good idea. I did have a humorous moment as I thought of the movie, “The Right Stuff” about the first astronauts and the physical exam process that NASA put them through before they were cleared for training. I can still laugh about it many years later as the scenes run through my mind. But this was different as I was not ready for this idea as a guy who flew for 30 years and kept fit to pass those flight physicals and PT tests. I work out hard and frequently; but, maybe enjoyed the retired…
