How to Paint Your World Yellow

    April 29, 2013 /

How to Paint Your World Yellow Plan, Plant, Play! Plan: Picture a garden. Let the flow of colors move with the seasons! Continue Reading for Gardening Tips Spring seems to inspire the love of yellow… stronger and longer sunshine. New leaf green definitely has the yellow tone. Hallelujah for the emergence of tulip and daffodil bulbs and then forsythia. Plant: Place daffodil bulbs in clumps, not spread out individually. They grow and love the friendship of kissing cousin bulbs… They will pop though your garden turf and each year bring on new family members. Trim bushes after flowers have faded. The goal is to get the bush compact and not…

“Mondays in My Garden”: Four Easy Ways to Save Money when starting your Garden

    March 11, 2013 /

There are a few blogs that I just love. Household 6 Diva is one of them.  Ann Marie is a down to earth Army spouse recently relocated from Germany to Texas and there are so many times that I think, “Wow, would we be good friends if our lives had ever crossed.” She started a series called “Mondays in My Garden”.  Be sure to read her inaugural post here: Welcome to “Mondays in My Garden” Ah… my garden.  Just the thought of it has my heart smiling. Yesterday it was 72 degrees out in NE Ohio.  The back door was open all day.  The front door was filled with sunshine.  Smiles, laughs, giggles…

    Starting Seeds in Milk Jugs

    March 4, 2013 /

I’ve got the itch as anyone who follows my Gardening Pinterest Board very well knows. It’s the beginning of March and I want to be outside, in the dirt, enjoying the sunshine, hard work and noises and smells of Spring. But it isn’t that time in NE Ohio.  Instead the forecast still includes snow, the temperatures are still in the 30s and getting the rototiller out is no where in site.  Sigh… That is why I LOVE starting seeds this time of year.  I get my hands dirty.  I get to watch my plants start.  I get to dream about what my garden will look like this year. A good…

Tasty Tuesday Peaches and Cream Pie OH MY!

    April 20, 2011 /

Have company….Have desserts ….Have laughter, discussions and seconds. That is just what we did this weekend. Friends over, Easter candy out in dishes, Blackberry Grunt and Peaches and Cream Pie warm from the oven….OH MY! Somehow the clock propelled around it’s face faster than a comet across the sky. Seem great friends come with military families. With friends come some great recipes that were first tasted in Kadena, or Osan; perhaps Ramstein or Queensland. This peaches and cream pie hit my taste buds in Florida. Sunshine state lit up my curiosity and the ‘chef’ handed it over! Now it is yours to share at your table. Enjoy! Peaches and Cream Pie3/4…

    Plant Your Easter Bulbs

    February 18, 2011 /

As I write this the temperature has climbed up into the 50’s. LOVE it. Last week we were into the minus degrees. Change comes and it goes, but the calendar marks the real changes that are coming: Spring and sunshine. Ahhhhhhh! There is a tangible change that you can experience right now. An ugly bag with a hairy bulb looks like it will be anything but beautiful. And change is so hard to see. Because the Easter amaryllis will take about 6 weeks to bloom get it ready to pot now. Placethat bulb in a fresh pot, with soft potting soil, drab as it seems, and as far away from…

    Seasonal Light Disorder

    January 28, 2011 /

“Seasonal Light Disorder”. Winter is tough. Winter in northeast Ohio is dark, dreary, cloudy. My mood can plumit into depths of darkness in an instant. Today at the grocery store I picked up a fresh basil plant. I came home, washed my kitchen window, put my new little ray of sunshine on a little plate. I BREATHED in the fresh spring air, the aroma of fresh gardens, sunshine and so much more all in a tiny little pot. What do you do to help with the dark dreary winter days? When we were stationed in Iceland we put lights on timers to help keep our ‘clocks’ on cycle. As those…

    Tasty Tuesday Banana Pepper Gratin

    October 5, 2010 /

Summer is so over… so very over. Temperature dipped to the twenties; leaves are brilliant red, orange with faded yellow edges; sunshine hours have slipped to dark morning and evenings. Autumn is here.. no doubt. The gleaner in me came out this weekend when I heard of the temperature forecast. Dale and I picked anything living out there that could be touched by a freeze. Whoa, I already have packed a peck of pickled peppers into the pressure cooker. My imagination has been running overtime as to how to use plant after plant that over produced this year. Yeah for that… but I can’t let them die on the plant.…

    Earth Day 2010

    April 20, 2010 /

I will tell you I’m not a ‘tree-hugger’. I spend probably too much money on pre-packaged foods. I always seem to forget to bring my own environmentally-friendly bags to stores – even though I do have a few of them. I don’t drive an oversized-SUV but my smaller size mini-van isn’t exactly the most economical vehicle out there. But I do care. I do know that I can make a difference. I am not going to change the hole in our ozone layer. I’m not going to save the world with some major campaign about how we are all doomed if we don’t make a change. I can hardly say…
