Military-Grade iPad case – Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines

    March 20, 2014 /

A cracked screen, sand in the casing, or jostled  insides in an iPad can render it useless.  As military members and military families we can be hard on our technology.  (Take a good look at my own case on my phone and you have proof positive.)  Whether using our iPads, tablets or phones on the job or packed in our goods for entertainment they need strong protection from the bumps, tumbles, drops and poundings of life. Looking for a good recommendation?  You have come to the right place!  I am very impressed with Trident’s Military-Grade iPad case.  It is rugged, and it shows our pride in the service.   It meets…

Watch out for Scammers during the Government Shutdown

    October 3, 2013 /

The government shutdown is having an impact on Americans (and the military community specifically) in numerous ways. The added inconveniences, costs (commissary closings), loss of income, reduced training opportunities and much more are adding stress to military families too. With this turbulence comes the opportunity for scammers to target you as well. These folks are out there and they take advantage of everyone; but the military lifestyle creates some unique challenges and many times the bad guys know this. With the current reduced government protective resources the identify theft folks are working overtime right now; the new health care law is new and a bit confusing which opened the door…

Are You Making the Right Choices for Alcohol Use?

    June 12, 2013 /

See Below for Photo CreditDecisions! We make them every day – active duty, reserves, guard members, retirees, military family members – all of us are faced with small or critical decisions every day of our lives. Sometimes, they are almost routine; like, what shoes do I wear today? Well, that might be a bigger decision for some than others. Sometimes a decision leaves us with a ‘I wish I had done it differently” or “What if” or a WTH (I prefer “heck”) moment or maybe,  “Wow, I made the right choice”. Alcohol (for everyone over 21) can be a big decision. If you have not reached your 21st birthday, you…

Active Living in the US Navy Even Has an IPhone App! DoD Blogger Roundtable

    May 8, 2013 /

“They have an IPhone App for their program…” Spring seems to be a great time to get started on new workout plans, healthier eating, gardens and more! May is even designated as physical fitness and sports month so it was great timing for the DoD Blogger Roundtable to discuss the US Navy Operational Fitness and Fueling System and some new and better ways to help stay healthy! As a long time advocate for a healthy lifestyle I was very interested in the topic but wanted to make sure that it would be interesting for our followers. Diana Strock, Physical Fitness and Injury Prevention Program Manager said they had “resounding feedback”…

On Your Way to a Smooth Move: DoD Roundtable

    March 20, 2013 /

It is that time! PCS season is upon us and many military families are negotiating orders and beginning the process of planning for a move. With that in mind, I had a great chance to listen to and speak with Barbara Thompson, Director, Office of Family Policy/Children & Youth, Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense. We all know that a PCS can be an amazing adventure but also an incredible stressor on families. I have an example for you; in the late 80’s my family moved from Ft. Walton Beach, Florida to Keflavik, Iceland. Can you say, “Change of scenery”? In the end the move to Iceland was…

5 Practical Ways to Save Money on Groceries

    February 28, 2013 /

    1. Make a list.  I know, time and time again you hear it.  “Make a list and stick to it.”  But writing a list on scarp paper and then losing that paper isn’t going to help.  Instead make the list practical.  I like using technology and since my phone is usually in the kitchen on the dock, it is very practical to keep my list there.   The free app that I use, is Grocery Pal but there are dozens of list apps out there.  I add items when I need them, when I start to run low, when I know it is time to restock.  I love that after I buy…

U.S. Special Operations Command Virtual Town Hall Meeting, 3/7/2013

    February 27, 2013 /

I love technology! Especially when it is used in the right place, for the right reason.Military Families spread out far and wide can’t usually go to a specific place, to meet people that can give them answers. Stepping up to the plate, meet the Virtual Town Hall Meeting: Are you a part of the U.S. Special Operations Command?  Part of the family?  Learn more about this opportunity to engage with leadership.  Ask the questions you need answer to.  Empower yourself with the facts. 1) Write your question on their Facebook wall: facebook.com/ussocom 2)  Learn more about recording your own question on a video:  3)  Find USSOCOM on Google+ where they will have their Live chat…

Military Kids Website Also Helps Parents, Educators

    January 23, 2013 /

Technology has come a long ways since I was a military-brat PCSing around the world in the 80s and 90s. I didn’t have to deal with year long deployments but I remember Dad being gone for six months at a time for training and schooling. Fast forward a ‘few years’ and I watched my husband head off to Iraq with the Ohio Army National Guard.  I had a few print pamphlets and a couple of Internet articles I could share with teachers that weren’t accustomed to having military-children in their classroom but there wasn’t much more support then that.I am so glad to see our military families getting the support they need! The Defense Department…

I’m a Winner! Thanks to UbiRock

    May 6, 2012 /

Isn’t it fun when you are notified that “You are a winner!”?  I have to admit it doesn’t happen often.  The first time I ever won something it was a windbreaker from a pet store – eons ago.  The next thing I remember winning was a baby carrier (backpack style) from Babies R Us soon after my now 9 year old was born.  We still have that backpack and it has been used for my other sons as well as my nieces and nephews.  It is like the gift that keeps on giving! Just last week I got that ‘You are a winner’ announcement once again.  Three days later in the…

The Heritage of a Military Brat

    January 30, 2012 /

*E*, 9 years old, came home very excited.  “MOM! We have a big project at school and it has to be about our heritage, where we come from.  I want to do the country of Iceland!” What is interesting is *E* is about 25% Hungarian, 12.5% Norwegian, a splash of Irish, Danish and French and the rest German.  Icelandic? There is none in his blood.  But it does run in his veins. I lived in the country of Iceland from 10th grade through 12th grade at the now closed Naval Base in Keflavik.  My dad flew helicopters out of the 56th Rescue Squadron with the US Air Force.  So when I talk about…
