A Thanksgiving Message from MilitaryAvenue.com
The entire MilitaryAvenue.com Team extends a happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones! What are some things MilitaryAvenue is thankful for? First and foremost, we are so very thankful for the people that work so tirelessly at keeping us safe. The Marines (OORAH!) , the Soldiers (Hooah!), the Airmen (HUA!), the Coast Guard (Oorah!), the Sailors (Hooyah!). We will say a special prayer at dinner for the families that stand behind the troops; especially the spouses and the children. But we won’t leave out the mothers, fathers, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and even grandchildren. Thank you to each of you for standing behind /your/ Service Member, remembering what they need throughout the year, physically…

The Happy Dance
She came from behind the door – Looking for her partner, her sparkling eyes find him, she raises her arms, a smile, almost a laugh on her face and begins The Happy Dance…. a combination of tap, ballet and boogie with music supplied by her heart. The audience in the lobby (despite being strangers, each and every one) knows the reason for The Happy Dance. Many are hoping for a chance to feel the same elation for themselves or their family member in the room too. Their turns must wait for the same wonderful doctors and technicians to provide care. Give to the Max Day: Our Military Kids
A few years ago hubs was in Iraq and I was the temporary-single mother of three boys. I am now a sometimes-single mom of four boys and life has forever changed since Iraq for our family. There was a recent amicable discussion amongst friends about the needs of grants and scholarships and such when the soldier is off in a war zone. A lot of times the pay is a bit higher because of the danger they are in … so is there really a need for great organizations like Our Military Kids, or free YMCA memberships, or other financial support? My answer? A resounding YES! Life was busy. But American…

What is Veterans Day?
Welcome in autumn. Our country steps up to elections. Our view of the land flashes from green to fading oranges and yellows. Where parks and buildings raise flag poles we see our nations pride: the American flag flies! It is more colorful; hangs more prominent; and displays strength on Veterans Day. Each November 11 America looks to the past, the present and is thankful for the future with eyes on our servicemen and women. This year 11/11/11 illustrates squadrons standing next to each other… the date is like a parade marching across a page; a phalanx of individual ‘ones’ standing side by side and displaying numerical meaning to the date.November…

Helping a Veteran!
The Big Dead Tree … respecting the flag they fought under… The weather is getting a bit cooler, the days shorter, school has started and Fall is upon us! Veteran’s Day is fast approaching … The MilitaryAvenue team is busy preparing for Veteran’s Day with helpful articles, blogs, another Giveaway opportunity, recognizing veteran support organizations and much more during the almost two months preceding November 11th. Then I thought about how I had so much to be thankful for as a veteran. A loving wife (who moved 18 times and will celebrate a 40th anniversary in the spring) and family, a great support team of family/friends, veteran benefits, a church…

Week in Review: July 31 – August 6, 2011 (Military News)
Popular Military Family Articles for the week of July 31 – August 6 on MilitaryAvenue.comMilitary Widow Reaches Out to Survivors After her husband was killed in Iraq in May 2007, Taryn Davis didn’t know where to turn. The 21-year-old didn’t live near a military installation, and while her family and friends were supportive, she yearned for the support of other military widows who could relate to her struggles. So one night on a whim, Davis turned to the Internet and “Googled” the word “widow.” The search engine suggested she try searching for “window” instead. That moment sparked a desire in Davis to offer the type of support to other young military widows…

What a great week!
A dinner at one of my new favorite restaurants with the love of my life; a newly stained deck; a fresh coat of oil on my deck table; a cleaned out garage, with a year’s worth of dirt, power-washed out back to its natural habitat; barbecued shish-kebobs with grilled asparagus and fresh bread with dipping sauce, (Wow, a meal with no “ICK… I’m not eating this”); evening walks; some wonderful alone-time with hubs; and wine… a few bottles of wine over the course of the week. It has been a great week! First of all MAJOR PROPS to my mom and dad for hosting the annual Camp Grandpa! The inaugural…

Caring for Our Wounded/Disabled Heroes! Two New VA & DoD Efforts to Help!
Military Appreciation Month was extremely busy with activities for military community members. The month included recognition programs and much to be thankful for; such as a successful mission to find and eliminate Al Qaeda’s leader. But life continues and now some military members are preparing for a PCS or deployment (again), some are in basic training (best wishes to a cousin’s friend at Ft Jackson) and many are helping out those affected by natural disasters such as flooding, fires and tornadoes (and we just started hurricane season). For some military members life changing events have had a significant impact on their lifestyle. Severe injury, retirement, separation, etc are at the…
