Rustic Christmas Tree
I was browsing Pinterest.com last month looking for an idea to use on Thanksgiving day. Each year, after dinner the Moms and tots let the Christmas spirit enter our thoughts with a homemade project. Simplicity is number one priority, as we are tired, full under the influence of a ton of turkey and boat loads of whipped cream. Those who attend, sail to the table with languid interest, yet each expect to come out with a DaVinci masterpiece. But it is fun. It is time to laugh at ourselves, try something new, pick through beads, choose twigs (that have been pre-drilled) and create a masterpiece… or at least something tangible.…

Training the Afghan National Police – DoD Roundtable
With the US Attorney General Eric Holder in Afghanistan this morning conducting high level talks about their legal systems it was very appropriate that we met with Col. Chadwick W. Clark, deputy commander for Combined Training Advisory Group Police (CTAG-P) during a Department of Defense Roundtable to continue our discussion of the Afghan National Police (ANP) training programs. The critical nature of the ANP training efforts and how it fits into the overall war effort to win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people was a great topic. The Afghan and NATO men and women with boots on the ground in Afghanistan will be the ones deciding if this…

Turkey in a Puff LeftoversTurkey Celebrated!
We always have a large crowd over for the holidays. Name the holiday – we love to entertain. When it is appropriate to have a spread with a turkey dinner… we roast a big bird… a mighty big bird! Because that means there will be enough gravy several nights of turkey leftovers. I love it. Dale loves it. We are happy people at this time of year!Turkey in a puff started out to be ham in a puff. Ham is not a family favorite, so I looked for a way to dress it up, even disguise it a bit. But to my non-ham loving children: ham is ham and the…

A Simple Gift to Make That Looks Good!
At thanksgiving time, I like to have something set up for folks to do wile either waiting for the turkey to fill the house with that undeniable, wonderful aroma … or to do while waiting for that undeniable FULL feeling to fade. We have put together simple quilts, sewn up patchwork pillow cases, made Santa faces out of magnolia pods and even painted tree ornaments. All were fun and a bit challenging. I think being artistically challenged allows us not to go for perfection… but allows us to be perfectly content! And after a large meal… being content is a good thing! This year we will be putting together a…

Rigatoni Turkey Dish
Dale came back in the kitchen: armed with creativity and focused on a delicious dinner. In our freezer was one lone Ziplock freezer bag with 2 cups of turkey breast. A mission in the making… I knew he was clicking off the requirements for this job. I handled the landing strip… aka our coffee table turned into a festive dinner site. He called all the ingredients into order, moved them into positions and assembled a meal worthy of five stars once again! Good work Sir! You demand the best and your creativity exemplify that! Rigatoni Turkey Dish 1 T olive oil1 red onion, peeled and finely chopped1 t chopped garlic1…

Turkey Leftover Time: Italian Turkey Casserole
I love Thanksgiving Dinner. A turkey, and the fixings does so much for the family! The aroma spreads throughout the house, the boiling pots heat up the kitchen. The windows steam. Warmth permeates the day… in so many ways. Then the dishes are cleaned, the turkey resurfaces for sandwiches on homemade bread and company leaves. However, the amount of turkey seems to grow in the refrigerator! Bring on the leftovers! For many, this is the favorite meal. There is little fuss involved, no silver to hand wash: just good food to savor. After the first night of leftovers, I liked to get creative. Italian Turkey Casserole has been a favorite for…

Fruit Basket Upset
Childhood games were the best: interaction, laughter and goofiness reigned in my ‘organized fun time’. Fruit Basket Upset required at least 10 friends, names of fruits: each child picked a fruit type. Then, with one less chair we waited for the ‘it’ to call out two or three fruits – at that time up we would jump and change chairs before ‘it’ could take our spot. Perfect name and game for this time of year. Soon the Thanksgiving fruit bowl will be assembled: pineapple, pears, apples, grapes, bananas, oranges and tangerines. The table will be arranged… and usually there is one less ‘good’ chair than I would like. (NEVER too…
