Who Ate My Muffin?
Yesterday started out as ‘one of those days’. I got up before the crack of dawn 8am but my boys were already up and moving. So I get up, get moving and am bombarded with requests… “Mom I need breakfast, Mom I can’t find socks, Mom my brother hit me, MOM!!!!!” All before I have wiped the sleep from my eyes. All before I have time to say “Good Morning, joys of my life.” Most importantly, all before I have had a sip of coffee. Ah the struggles of motherhood. I really had to laugh at this rendition of “If you Give a Mouse a Cookie” (shared with me by a…

Summer 2012 Bucket List
Summer Vacation is soon upon us. A time of year I LOVE! The lack of routine is so refreshing but amazingly enough becomes a little old after only a few weeks (and depending on the moment, sometimes only after a few days). So this summer my boys and I have created a ‘Bucket List’. Things we all want to do in the course of our lazy-days of summer. Somethings are things I want to do as a family. Some things are dreams. Others are already being planned. This is our list of plans, ideas and joys for the summer: Ride our Bike to Tasty Freeze Have a backyard game of kickball Catch fireflies…

Home Maintenance equals Money in the Bank
It is Military Saves week! A subject that is dear to my heart as Americans (including military-families) find themselves in more and more financial trouble. Sometimes saving money can be found in the simple things. Today’s blog post on saving money is about what you can do in the day-to-day. There is value in maintaining your home. Take the time — and I know we are all so very busy — to take care of our ‘stuff’ and you will find more money in the budget for other important things. If we maintain our electronics (invest in a can of compressed air for the computer as an example), vehicles (are…

Saving Money Around the House
Click on any of the pictures to find some easy ways that YOU can save money around the house. Where would you put an extra $10 to $30 a week? Perhaps towards your retirement? A down payment on a home? A vacation? Start saving now for a brighter future! (Remember you can click on the image to read more.) Start a savings shadow box with a picture of what we’re saving for. This would also be cool for the kids, to teach them to save for something by seeing you do it and letting them join in with items they want as well. Perhaps a picture of Disney World, a picture…

Drink More … Feel Better
It was a rough start to our Christmas Break. The night before the final day of school and my first-grader was thinking of a school field trip in the morning and a class-party in the afternoon. What a fun day it was going to be. He had a rough cough for the past week but I just knew it would go away. Eventually. As we were settling into our bedtime routine that Thursday night *C* lost it. Vomit, vomit, vomit. Gross, gross gross. He spiked a fever and I knew he was down for the count. That cough stayed with him for another week. Cough medicine didn’t touch it and I was…

Calendars of the Season
Our calendars are there to remind us. Sometimes they say it is time for an appointment, or a vacation or maybe a weekend getaway. For military families they can mean the return of a loved one or the day they depart (hardest one maybe) for a mission or deployment. Today our little family calendar reminded us that 10 years ago today I had picked up a new brand new C-17 from the Boeing Long Beach California plant. It still had that brand new smell to it – like a car but without the leather. We landed to a bit of fanfare at McChord AFB with each new C-17 but tail…

A Gift of Your Time
This weekend’s 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks brought a lot of reminiscing for America and individuals. “We Will Never Forget … “ Where we were, why did this happen and how we responded as a nation. The images just flowed through my head of the towers burning in New York, the Threat Condition Delta on our military installations, locked and loaded automatic weapons at the installation entry points, a command post full of very determined airmen and the President reading to a young group of children. So many to remember … As we were enjoying our coffee and breakfast this morning, I pulled out our calendar with special…

Those First Day of School Anxieties
I will never forget my first day of 4th grade at a brand new school. We had PCSed from Reese AFB, Lubbock, Texas to Scott AFB, Illinois and once again I was the new kid. I am not sure when exactly Spelling class was that day and I can’t remember the teacher’s name anymore but there I sat at my new desk, amongst all new faces and I started to cry. I was dying. So overwhelmed. So embarrassed. Unacknowledged. Feeling friendless. It was an awful feeling. I can take myself back to that moment instantly and have empathy for /any/ student that is starting a new school. I even remind my own boys to take the time to…
